Hardest climb.

What was the hardest climb of this years route in your opinion? What made it the hardest? Pitch? Length? Too early in the day or late in the route?
Also what was your most memorable?
I really enjoyed The climb getting into Denison followed by the long downhill and then the climb into the city center. Also enjoyed the climb the next day getting out of Denison on a misty morning over-viewing the beautiful valley. Tough climb before the muscles (and my brain) were fully awake.
There were many others that now all look fuzzy in my memory. The one getting into Newton was fun.

Baxter to Newton kicked my butt! It had been such a lovely ride from Ames to State Center, then a killer ending!

After Wildcat Den when they teased us by letting us ride along side the Mississippi. Late in a longish last day with bonus miles ( who else had 7-8 miles extra for the day?) Then stop and take a left up to Blue Grass.

I too had that many extra miles than expected…I was wondering if or where I miscalculated…

The discrepancie is probably due to where you camped. My wife camped by the pool and that added 3-4 miles the previous day and getting out the next day. I did reset my odometer as I passed where the vendors were and ended up almost to the dot.

Ripley St. in Davenport….had to climb that to get back to my car. By far the steepest climb of the week, nice way to end :)

That long forever sucker getting into Boone!

I dunno what the hardest was as none really stood out to me. never witnessed throngs of people walking up anything. Last year there was 4 memorable hills, this year, to me, nothing sticks out.

I agree with Cory Rood. Also, turning left to go up hill to Blue Grass was a late day gear grinder. During this stretch I was tickled to see older couple (estimated age 74-76) making up the Blue Grass hill with electric assist on their bikes. They were just gleeming from ear to ear and just witnessing this just made me smile.
The excitement of riding a bicycle……………

I had 10 extra miles the last day—78 miles per Strava, the longest day of all! I had been wondering if that happened to others. I camped by the RAGBRAI trailers. I also did some riding around Davenport at the end that accounted for an extra mile or so (but certainly not 10).

Hardest climb was along the 8.3 mile extra ride to get to camp after Sigourney. Toughest along the route had to be one of the ones from Baxter to Newton. Those hills were tough, there was a headwind, the afternoon heat, and the effects of too much partying at Mr PorkChop/in Baxter after the first 55 miles of the day had been so easy.

Nothing felt very difficult or crowded this year, steepest were on the gravel loop.

I would vote for the final hill turning left out of Montpelier. That was the only hill I saw someone walking their bike back down with their rear derailleur dragging on the ground beside their bike…

The first hill out of Iowa City!! Ugg!

Nothing is too hard for me and Sheila (Trek 920)… but on the last day, there was a climb that was a 10% grade! LOLLLLL!!!!!!

Those first few coming out of Moorhead were the hardest I ran into. Sandy and 12%. Thanks TJ!

the ride from the dip site to the PBV staging area. Worst roads of the week. Davenport is a dump!
