How many kits do you bring I guess you wash clothes to keep weight down

On the plus side, I now have a great reason to also bring an air horn. (See: Bicycle Boom Box.)

Well, I was initially really concerned about this list lol. I know I brought way too much stuff on my 1st RAGBRAI. The hide-a-bed air matress couch is a bit much, but it still comes with me every year. I love that thing! And I organize our team, so I get some concessions hahaha. Anywho, Please cut this list down for next years post with the necessities and let beginners decide what other things they may need that’s not on the list. This is just deceiving. Plus, RAGBRAI already has a suggested list.

He who has the most stuff and finishes the race 1st wins…

I think beginners should overpack first, then trim down rather than “oh shit, I forgot xyz.”

Sure, overpack at home. Then walk around the block while pushing your bike. When you get home reassess your packing. How much do I really need.
I take 3 off bike shirts, the technical wicking kind. 1 long sleeve, 1 short, 1 sleeveless. 3 pairs of shorts enough for me. Rainjacket, 2 pair of socks in case it gets that cool. Arm warmers, leg warmers, skullcap. Fingered and regular bike gloves. 4 pairs of shorts and jerseys. So I need to rinse out things at least 3 times. Mattress and pump that needs 4 batteries. A sheet and I usually have room for a pillow too.
The night bag has liquid soap, 2-3 cheap washrags, smple size toothpaste, travel brush, asprin, ear plugs, eyemask. Quick dry towel and a couple of clothspins.
Everything in the duffles is packed in drybags. Except tent rainfly groundcloth.
Side pocket in duffle has bug spray, after bite, bandaids.
Tent, Groundcloth, rainfly, a few extra stakes in case I need extra takedowns. And tieline.
Under seat bag has spare tube, tire levers, charging cord, a small roll tape, and a piece to use as a boot if I cut a tire, knife
Pannier with sunscreen, lip balm, room for the rain jacket and pants if I need to take them. Usually throw in the cargo net too. Battery charger in case I do another stupid leave the phone on day. Also have camping silverware, and a plastic bag

Front and rear lights, computer, 2 water bottles, frame pump.
Jersey pocket gets phone, wallet, camera.
Helmet. Sandals. Off bike sandles for night.
If I need anything else I can buy it.

Her’s a way to get down to the necessaries: bring nothing. Or just your riding clothes. If you have to have it, buy it.

Some might say you’re bringing too much if you bring nothing. LOL!

Larry Klaaren, June 26, 2019 at 9:48 am

I would agree that if you bring more than clothes to wear while biking, clothes to wear in the evening. a bike and helmet, stuff to clean up with, your tent and sleeping stuff, money and your insurance cards, it is by your choice that you have it along, cause you don’t need it. You might like to have it, but it is your choice to carry that around or haul it.

Quite the glamping list, are you bringing a trunk? Get rid of half the clothes and cologne. Where’s your flashlight? Refer to the packing list the RAGBRAI page suggests.

Add to this list a bowling ball, a Game of Thrones sword and a Costco size jug of Tide laundry detergent. The exact same points have been made at least a dozen times, is there any end in sight for this thread?

RDaryl Daryl, June 26, 2019 at 10:31 pm

Although TEAM BAD BOY has been known to bring the kitchen sink, I think they pack less.

Put sweatband on the list . I learned to wear one after my first time on Ragbrai . My sweat kept getting in my eyes and made me hem sting . All was good once I wore a headband to collect the sweat .
