RAGBRAI LI July 20 -27, 2024

How many counties have you visited?

I started RAGBRAI’ing in 2017 so I have 2 under my belt. I finally started a project this week where I took two printed state maps and on one I shaded each county that I have ridden RAGBRAI in. The other I traced the route for each RAGBRAI. I can’t wait to see what these look like in 20 years. This made me curious, anyone else do something like this? How many counties have you visited on RAGBRAI(inclusive of Gravel and Century Loops, if you rode them) How many counties do you have left that you haven’t visited? Which Ones? How many RAGBRAI’s have you done?

The pins across the top/right are the 29 rides my wife and I have done together. The ones on the left are any others I could get, some are part of the 7 my wife did with her family growing up. The highlighted routes are what we actually rode, which was not ‘always’ the actual route.

I hit the 99th county (Lucas) on RAGBRAI 25. I’ve been on 38 RAGBRAI’s with my first in 1974. All have been ridden the whole way.

Great idea and winter project. 30 Ragbrais . I see a t-shirt / jersey coming with all the Ragbrai routes on the map of Iowa. Where do I buy one ?

Last time I recall such a classic t-shirt was XXX/2002 (all maps on back) – “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Cycling” back when the DMR was part of the Tribune Company. Not sure which bike shop I bought it from as the shirt only states “Used with permission”

Started riding in 2003 – this year will be #18 consecutive. Looking at the Iowa County Map and cross-referencing it to the past RAGBRAI overnight towns grid it appears we have stayed in or gone through all 99 counties.

Yes, I did make it to Lansing, dipped my tires and had put the bike away…. oh well, I came back the next year and no ER’s visits!

Interesting … 2004 to 2018 I must have hit all 99 counties in Iowa and now I’m wondering how many towns and cities are in Iowa and how many have I biked? Must be a bunch. Last year I put together a list by city/town of highlights from my past Ragbrais and the highlight of interesting things to see in each which I used as a guide to travel to via our car on a trip with my wife. We only planned a week prior to the start of the 2019 Ragbrai and we had a great time. We’ve also sampled several states between Pennsylvania and Iowa on previous pre-Ragbrai trips in 2016 and 2018 (Illinois, Ohio, Missouri, West Virginia).

Twenty-one rides starting in 1995 and skipping a few along the way and I read it as 82 counties. That’s counties where we either started, ended, or overnighted. Having to guess whether I’ve ridden through all 99, I think I have.

Our first time doing a ragbrai was in 2015..We tested the water rode from our home in Fort Dodge to Eldora in 2015…and we have been on every ragbrai since and will be doing everyone from here on out…

To add to this, it would be great if the new leadership could add all the old routes, miles, towns, etc online. Sort of like Geobike. I loved Geobike, and miss the data.

Will be # 18 for me. Missing only Taylor and Clark. Did ride the county line road south of Blakesburg so I am counting Monroe (must have ventured over the centerline at least once!).
