"Humongus" Hill on Day 3

Does anybody know any of the specs and details on the “Humongous” hill reported in the day 3 pre-ride report. Wondering if its a killer or just another hill in Iowa.

If you’re an avid rider, it wont be the % of climb that gets you, it will be the people pushing their bikes ten or twelve people wide!

AMEN! And they are clueless that they are 12 wide.

Most definitely.. the volume of people trying to climb the same hill at the same time.. safety.. be in the right gear.. down shift.. spin baby spin… Mind over matter… great tunes help..

There’s a rumor going around that some people want to avoid the hills by taking a shortcut down through Rippey and Perry, get over to Woodward, cross the Trestle Bridge, go to Slater and hit up the route by Kelly just south of Ames. Seems a little risky to me. Just do the hills, you know?

wouldn’t surprise me to see a lot off route that day. jump on the RRVT from Jefferson through Cooper, Jamaica, Dawson to Perry. then about 4-5 miles in shoulder of 141, divided 4 lane road, county road up to Bouton, county road to Woodward, HTT to Slater. About 5-6 miles up R38 to the route, R38 has a designated bike shoulder on each side. Don’t know if it’s shorter or not.

I actually mapped the route I had above earlier. It’s 56ish miles.

My guess is that the people comfortable enough to detour that far off the official route are the same people who would just ride the damn hill.

Well here is my plan: when I get to that hill, I am going to do my best to climb it. That’s about it. I’ll shift down, keep the cadence up, and move on. All I can do.
