Registration for Great Iowa Fall Ride Open!

in between towns and rest stops, and alcohol consumption .

i just watched a million spokes film on ragbrai. and it seemed like a lot of folks did not make the whole ride. they say they rode the whole thing, but the really did not cause they took the sag wagon on several days. i mean i just want to finish the ride without getting hung over and feeling bad.

so if i ride say 100 miles week. And i have a big ride on the weekend will this get me ready. i mean some weeks i do 120 a week. it really seems like those stops help get you rested and makes the ride a lot easier.how much do those rest stops help>,and i could ride all day stopping every 10 to 15 miles.

Think of it as a series of short rides. Take 30-60 minutes to get to the next town and then explore (the biggest rookie mistake is riding too fast). Rest stretch, get something to eat/drink, stretch, take a nap in someone’s front yard, then head off to the next town. It’s a ride not a race.
Drink as much or as little as you want. Keep up with your fluids and electrolytes. You’ll be amazed at how much of a buzzkill riding a bike in summer heat is.
If you’re not used to riding long distance, put a couple 40+ mile days back to back to get used to it. Your butt still needs the saddle time to get toughen up for the week.

SFC JKL2 is EXACTLY right and has excellent advice. I always tell RAGBRAI newbies that if you have a 70 mile day, think of it as 10, 7 mile rides or 7, 10 mile rides.

awsome ya’ll. i think i will try and have a good time, and not worry about the intangables. i mean i want to have fun and meet good folks!!or
but i want to have a good ride too. i think i will drink maybe 1 or in each town, and when i get to the last town before the over night town , then drink a few more.

And watch for the Iowa Craft Beer tents, 2 a day. 1 in the first half and 1 near the end. Some selections differ each day and location. May look like long lines but have your money out and they can get people through quick

thanks ya’ll i mean i don’t drink a lot anyway, but the doctors told me my beer days are over because of the barley and wheat . i mean it upsets my stomach. i can drink a little wine. this is really a bummer. i do a lot better with gator aid. they say i can’t process the beer anymore. but i may drink a light beer like maybe 1 and then drink 1 at the end. but that will be about it. i think i will stick to a glass of wine. thanks guys.

I think you can still enjoy a glass of wine while having a good conversation with some folks.
