No longer competing with RAGBRAI
I continue to be proud of the organizers of Iowa’s Ride. I’m planning to do both rides (we retired folks have that option). I love my state of Iowa. I love riding my bike. Now we have TWO WEEKS a year to look forward to! Woohoo! (Well, actually four weeks, the Iowa State Fair . . . and Christmas . . . .)
This is great news! To be clear IR will still be competing with RAGBRAI but now it will compete in a way that is both fair and in the long run leaves room for both rides to grow without straining Iowa’s resources. It will offer those who always wanted an east to west ride to have that. And it will let those few (or many) who dreamed of doing a two week ride the option to do that.
Classy move on TJ’s part. How’s that search for a new ride director going? Crickets from Gannett and the Register. Still wondering…will there be a RAGBRAI?
I would label it “pragmatic”, rather than “classy”. Yes, Randi, there will be a RAGBRAI, probably ten times larger than Iowa’s Ride.

There will be a RAGBRAI. This is why they changed the dates.
As an outsider, hoping to do my 1st, I’m hoping the eastern and westernmost towns are the same so I can perhaps do both without assistance. Wouldn’t that be a great thing?
Dates are 7/12-7/18, the week before RAGBRAI, according to the IR website. East-west route.
No question it’s the right move but I wonder how many IR riders who have already registered will want a refund (they only get 75% back according to the site).
In the email I got it said 100% refund if the new date didn’t work for you.
Website needs to be updated and still has the old dates showing as well.

IR’s Facebook post says 100% refunds due to the date change.
One good outcome: the East starting town will get the benefit of what West starting towns have had instead of the ‘can’t wait to be done so I can leave and go home’. I’ve always felt the end towns were at a disadvantage.
Just curious — has the original founder of RAGBRAI, John “Grandpa RAGBRAI” Karras, provided any input on this whole wrangaboo? Or is he taking the high road, staying mum, and steering clear of all of it?
In football terminology, this is a “Hail Mary”…it’s an attempt for Iowa’s Ride to save face. The only way I could see this working is for the westernmost and easternmost towns for both rides to be the same. Otherwise, shuttling between for those attempting both would be a nightmare.
John Karras has hinted that he might ride RAGBRAI on a recumbent this year. That would be great if he can do it. I assume he would ride only a token amount if he is able to do this at all.
This great news!!! No more trying to decide who to support. No more tearing people apart!!!
