Is it too early to prognosticate the 2018 route?

I don’t think it’s too early. Evidently, the city of Davenport doesn’t either:

I could see us going both north and south of I-80. Perhaps hug I-80 until we get past Central Iowa.

I’ve often guessed unconventional routes but the route planners have followed the pattern pretty closely during my acquaintance with the ride. If the pattern says central then central it most likely will be. I’d like to see a diagonal route and all the Twain references in the pre-announcement hype had me thinking this could be the year. Instead we had a very nice, conventional northern route. Davenport and Clinton could easily be on the 2018 route. Des Moines maybe, it’s been a while and it’s obviously an important town for the ride. All I know for sure is that I have a spectacularly poor record as a route guesser!

It’s only a guess.. but I feel they will never be far from US 30.. The Lincoln Highway route…
Missouri Valley.. Ames.. Marshalltown.. Cedar Rapids.. Clinton..

I think we are due for a larger and easier to navigate end town for the support vehicles after the traffic jam in Lansing. The last time RAGBRAI ended in Davenport was a bit too recent. I’m thinking Dubuque.

Camanche has applied for the last few years. Maybe they are due. They are just south of Clinton so I think that would jive with a central route. I also think Dubuque is a strong guess too. I doubt that DSM will be a host but probably a town around DSM. I’ve been pretty lucky because I usually guess three or four towns a year.

I would love to see Camanche … I know they’ve pushed for it. Clinton would be fun again too.

And also, I say NO TO DAVENPORT … that is the lamest end town we have, and maybe it’s because the Bix sucks up the energy. There is no activity or party at the end, you almost feel like you’re in a pass-through town, but instead dip your tire and leave.

I’ve ridden with a charter group every year, and the last day is ALWAYS a rush to get into town, rinse the tire off, get my stuff on the bus, and get outta town. I’ve always missed the opportunity to spend more time in these towns, and feel sorry that these people go through so much effort for us but get no where near the time or energy that the previous 7 towns / cities do. The last day town seems to get the short end of the stick. Granted, that’s the way it is and has always been (at least for the last 45 years).
Maybe – just maybe – we could go against tradition and do a EAST to WEST ride sometime?
Maybe – just maybe – I could be RICH AND HANDSOME?????
