Last year the only problem I really encountered was sunburned, chapped and dry lips. I failed to take any action until it was too late. Could someone advise me what to use to prevent the issue? Lip balm with sunscreen?? Just keep them well moisturized? A different product all together?

I take along a small jar of Vaseline and put it on throughout the day
After multiple ragbrai’s and sunburned lips, I found a system that works for me. 1) I have added a sport version of the DaBrim to my helmet to provide lots of additional shade on my face and back of my neck. 2) I use Bert’s Bees “All Weather” chapstick that’s SPF 15 and no bad taste like some of the others. It’s white in color but blends quickly. With these two items, your good for the whole week.
Another vote for Burts Bees all weather chapstick. SPF 15 might not sound like much but it is actually plenty. More important than the SPF number is to reapply it. So keep it handy and reapply a few times during the day.
I have also used some higher SPF chapsticks. Odd taste and don’t really work better. If you are really concerned then Neutrogena makes some 30-50 range.
I have a problem with this all summer. I use both Burt’s Bees and Chapstick and find no difference.
SPF lip protection has always done the trick for me.
Classic Chapstick (SPF 4) didn’t work well for me on my first two RAGBRAIs. I switched to Blistix (SPF 30) and haven’t had any problems since.
Banana Boat Sport with a broad spectrum SPF 50 works really well for me. Just reapply about every 90 minutes.
Without a doubt, DERMATONE. Have used it for years to keep lips safe in extreme sun conditions.
thanks everyone. I appreciate the advice!
I’ve heard that lots of kissing seems to keep the lips shaded and the moisture level up 🙂
Lacking that, I’ve always used Dermatone with good results.

I use a chapstick with 45spf. The problem is I have to reapply multiple times and I tend to forget.☹️
All funny replies! This is my third RAGBRAI and both times before I would get chapped lips about day 3 or 4. Then start looking around for the chapstix. Most anything will help, just don’t wait till day four to start!
I have my chapstick on a lanyard. It helps you put the stuff on more often when it is right there all the time.
Ride On!
