Never too soon

I start training for next years RAGBRAI this weekend. I can’t wait. Gonna start slow, maybe just clean up the bike or adjust the saddle or something. Probably have a beer while I’m at it.

Washington-Muscatine again after 2016?

My money is on ending in Bellevue.

We got our wish this year, along with many other riders to cross off our
99th county with Allamakee. TJ has shown a desire to go to towns that
RAGBRAI has never visited, or at least not for a long time. My wish list
for 2018 includes Eagle Grove, Vinton, and Keokuk. I’ll throw in Camanche,
I know they’ve been lobbying for it. If I get one I’ll be happy.

Doh! I didn’t update the list. Then make that Fairfield,Burlington

I see a route from Missouri Valley to Audubon that goes through 5 new towns. Marshalltown to Montezuma 1 new town and a new overnight, 1 new town the next day. Perry and Marshalltown both had the evenings activities rained out last time we were there and Ames has been 10 years.

Eagle Grove is a sure thing, I saw the outline of an eagle head on the stained, well traveled, frayed magic napkin. Further, there will be a man wearing an eagle costume in a grove of oak trees as we approach Eagle Grove.

I think this is the year we return to Denison after such a long time … also betting Mo Valley for a starting town and an overnight in Grinnell.

jake d, August 11, 2017 at 7:13 pm

If we start in Mo Valley anytime in the next 20 yrs, it will be too
soon for me. Great town, WAY TOO MANY TRAINS to get any sleep. My
vote is for starting in Le Mars. They’ve only hosted once and did
a great job.

Sandaltan ., August 12, 2017 at 8:15 pm

Right Jake D, too many trains in Mo Valley……………woooo woooo wooo ding ding ding ding all night.

jake d, August 12, 2017 at 10:13 pm

I really do think Mo. Valley is a great town. However, this year was my
28th RAGBRAI which comes out to 196 overnight towns, not counting the
ending town. If I had to rate the worst overnights as far as getting any
sleep, our three stays in Mo. Valley would all make the top 10, two of
those top 5. Talking to other cyclist, their sentiments seem to agree.

Onawa, Denison, Coon Rapids, Madrid, Newton, Belle Plaine, Tipton, Clinton. No particular reason for this list, just looked at the past routes and picked a few that it’s been a while and a few we haven’t been through yet.

LeMars would be a great starting town! Mrs Woo and I stayed there in 2015 and 2017. It was only about 25 miles away from Sioux City and Orange City, so getting to the start towns was no problem those times. Plus, the Big Sioux River in Akron is an easy 30 miles away for tire-dipping purists. The town is large enough to accommodate the huge crowd and the citizenry is super friendly. There are several parks, ball fields and golf courses that can be used for campgrounds.

For Mrs Woo and me, the clincher is the fact that LeMars is the home of the Blue Bunny ice cream parlor. We’ve sampled their offerings many times! Yum!

LeClaire would be a great ending town. They have prior experience hosting the rolling Mardi Gras, have a great downtown area for the commotion, multiple dip site choices, and, most importantly, easy access to I-80 for quick getaways in any direction.

How ’bout it, TJ?

See you along the I-O-Way in 2018.

I think we are due for another trip through Central Iowa. Ames and Ankeny are overdue. I personally think you will see one of those towns be announced in January. Missouri Valley is overdue as well.

CyclingCyclone, August 14, 2017 at 12:26 pm

Onawa (last 2004), Ida Grove(2006), Audubon(2006), Johnston(1974 aka Camp Dodge), Montezuma (new), Vinton (1978), Dyersville(2007), Bellevue(2007).
But I’ll take any route the Register gives us.
