This will be my first RAGBRAI. What do people do the night before Day 1? Is there camping in the starting town?
Yes, there is camping. There’s camping Friday if you want too. The expo will be going on in the afternoon. Then there will be a band, food, drinking, and all the other stuff you will do every other night that week.
My first year, we got in Saturday afternoon to a whirlwind of activity. Since then, I have tried to arrive Friday afternoon. It is the one quiet time I get on RAGBRAI, the start town is fairly peaceful. The Expo on Saturday is worth spending some time it, as many of the vendors are only there that day.
And for those coming in from the East and parking their car for the week and using a charter….you would camp in the end town on Friday night, then ride a bus to the start town on Saturday morning, arriving in plenty of time set up camp and enjoy the expo.
There will be official bands. And at least one bandit band called Placid Quake. They played out of a garage in Onawa last year. Word is they’ll play at some dive bar and grille in Council Bluffs this year. Keep an eye out for them. They won’t be hard to hear. They were once considered by critics as one of Western Iowa’s loudest bands. At least one band member is also riding RAGBRAI.
Yeeeeaaahhh! Placid Quaaaaaaaake!!!! Be sure to let me know where you guys set up.
Omaha has an”OLD Market” tourist trap area that’s only 7 miles from the river. Many, many bars and lots of entertainment. Any local could direct you.
Night before is usually very fun (Orange City comes to mind). Usually has the expo, a band, beer and food tents. This time is also in a bigger metro so if you wanted to go bike around you could very easily. There’s a casino nearby if you wanted to gamble, or go check out downtown Council Bluffs/Omaha.
We camp and have a meet and greet.
Lost and Found Adventures is one of the oldest charters with RAGBRAI.
Our charter offers a number of options…
We are a family owned and ran business.
1. Airport pick up and drop off is provided this year by Holiday Inn / Ameristar, for our riders convenience.
2. An air-conditioned Charter coach bus from Keokuk back to Council Bluffs, the start town.
3. Baggage support across Iowa.
4. Camp showers daily (where permitted).
5. Ice cold refreshments.
6. Hot coffee in the AM.
7. Tent service, small set up, or Large all inclusive.
8. Check us out. http://www.lfadventures.com/home-page.html
It’s official…sort of. This is a non-RAGBRAI-sanctioned live music, burgers and beer event.
PLACID QUAKE (formerly of Onawa, IA…and once considered by critics as one of Iowa’s many bands) will be shaking the soles of your feet with some 70’s, 80’s and 90’s tunes.
Dan and Jami’s Railway Grill and Bar – 115 S. 12th street…just a few easy miles from MAC, if you’re looking for some fun entertainment away from the crowds at RAGBRAI. Placid Quake played Onawa last year and entertained several people!
And I’ll admit, we’re not as good as we used to think we were, but we’re better than we actually used to be. And if you get your pipes adequately lubricated and want to grab the microphone, we’ll have a song for you. (Otis…this is where you come in!)
It’s our sometimes-annual truncated North American tour. Rock-n-Ride!
