Just got back from 2+ wonderful days of riding in Lanesboro MN, on the Root River Trail. As anyone familiar with the area knows, there is a fabulous pie shop along the trail in Whalan. Having ridden 22 RAGBRAI’S I’m no stranger to great pie, but this shop had something I had not experienced; Blubarb Pie (Blueberry,Rhubarb). I have to say, it was the best Rhubarb and/or Combination I have ever tasted.
This being our first trip to Lanesboro, I don’t know if this is a local favorite, or a Minnesota thing. We did see the same flavor offered at another place.
So to all those prospective 2012 RAGBRAI pie stands, I put forth the challenge/(shameless personal request), to match our neighbors to the north, and serve the best Blubarb Pie a biker has ever tasted,

Oh yes, World Famous Pies. But were you in Lanesboro for the cookie walk or the meat raffle?
We will be in Whalan next weekend. in addition to pie, we will see their annual standstill parade where the stuff is parked and it is you walk past it.
Have ridden the Root River trail 3 times … really cool. Yes, great pies in Whalen and great burgers at the Bent Wrench Saloon in Fountain … cold beer as well! Have campedin the city park and stayed at Brewster’s Red Hotel, great place.
Umm… We must have missed that in the visitors guide.
Quarter Quarter in Harmony a good place. Good food, beer & wine selections. The meat raffle on Fridays at VFW and cookie.walk at Sons of Norway on Saturday morning last 3-4 years in October when we have been there.
Chiggy Liquor store in Peterson is a good stop if you are looking for “Off Sales” or better yet, a good Chiggy Liquor Store t-shirt. One of my favorite t-shirts is my Chiggy Liquor store shirt.
RIDE RIGHT
This is why I’m doing RAGBRAI … my goal is to eat pie every day!

Because of the weather, we didn’t arrive until Sun. afternoon and left Tues. mid-moring. Unfortunately, because it’s still early in the season and it was early in the week, not everything was open including the VFW and the Sons of Norway. Guess that just gives us another reason to go back.
Quarter Quarter was open, and now I’m wishing that had been our choice for dinner.
Chiggy Liquor, I knew we should have stopped from the name alone. We had plenty of adult beverage waiting for us back in Lansboro, but didn’t think about a cool t-shirt.
The pie is great, Chiggy Liquor special and smoky river bbq in lanesboro is brand neww and very good!
Smoky river in a hose down the hill from downtown? We were there on their second night open, no signs or anything up, the guy at Slant Alley suggested it. Had the Gumbo, or was it jambalaya? Visited Bent Wrench too. World Famous Pies was owned by the guy who runs Overland Touring. First met him when he worked at a tv station (KGAN?) Cedar Rapids and they sponsored a 2 day ride on the trail up to Waterloo and back.
Blubarb? Sounds intriguing. I’ve never had or even heard of that combination, but will have to try my hand at baking one and finding out for myself. I’ll take your request under advisement.
