Postpone RAGBRAI XLVIII to 2021??

I could be wrong but it appears doubtful COVID-19 will be under complete control with very little chance any riders, townspeople and venders could become infected. I don’t really want it to postpone but, also, I want it to be “safe” with almost zero chance of infection. If postponed to 2021, I propose the route to be retained in fairness to all communities involved. For planning, the decision for RAGBRAI should be done by at least early to mid May.

If postponed one year, the 50th RAGBRAI could occur in 2023, the 50th anniversary of the first ride.

The inaugural George S. Mickelson Trail Summer Trek 2020 in June has been cancelled due to COVID-19. The George S. Mickelson Trail is a 107 mile rail trail in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The have had a fall ride in September for 23 years and it always sells out in days.

Iowa’s Ride has now canceled too. A ball of RNA, protein, and grease is wrecking so many lives directly and through collateral damage. Keep safe my friends. I hope to see you all in 2021.

Another one bites the dust… LMB, the League of Michigan Bicyclists, just announced the cancelation of their summer tours.

The Erie Canal Ride hasn’t canceled but it appears that those who have reserved can cancel with no penalty, certainly magnanimous but if too many people decide to bail maybe the ride will be canceled for lack of riders and not so much because of the Chinese virus. They too are opening the option to defer til next year, cancel with a donation, or just cancel. I’m waiting til the bitter end.

Another September ride goes on hiatus. https://www.pedaltheplains.com/

With all good intentions, we were planning on kicking off the The Denver Post Pedal The Plains 2020 with a route announcement in mid-March. But then our world changed dramatically with the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, we have made the difficult decision that it simply is not the right time to move forward with an event when there is still so much unknown. The most important thing to consider is the safety and well-being of all the riders, sponsors, communities, volunteers, vendors, and everyone else associated with Pedal The Plains.

While on hiatus we will be working through all our event procedures, rethinking how we do things to ensure maximum safety. There will be a new normal, so this is a very important review to do. Both of The Denver Post Community Foundation Bike Tours – Pedal The Plains and Ride The Rockies – put participant safety ahead of all else.

We will also be working on the next edition of Pedal The Plains with all the usual homegrown fun you’ve come to expect from this event. Just thinking about the myriad of animals (alpacas, buffalos, cows, pigs, horses, and more), lively music, delicious locally sourced food, and welcoming communities of past Pedal The Plains makes it a little easier to get through these tough times. Indeed, there is much to look forward to and we can’t wait to see you on Colorado’s Eastern Plains in 2021!

Be safe and well,

Deirdre Moynihan
Tour Director, The Denver Post Pedal The Plains

Dear Denver Century Ride Cycling Family:
We hope this update finds you and your family staying well. As with you, the Denver Century Ride leadership team highly anticipates the phased “reopening” of Colorado. We have been carefully following the decrees and directions from Governor Polis, Mayor Hancock and other civic leaders to determine the safest approach and best overall plan to host the 2020 Coldwell Banker Denver Century Ride, presented by Bank of America.

Triple Bypass postponed (possibly just for the first time) to 9/26/2020.

The Canal Ride is the latest casualty.

Still a few short rides on the deck for late July and early August – RAIN and Amishland & Lakes (Indiana), then Candak (ND).

Ride Across Wisconsin has cancelled. https://www.rideacrosswisconsin.com/

One of the best things about the Ride Across Wisconsin (RAW) is the way that it connects people across our great state through cycling. Unfortunately, in our current health environment, such a large gathering isn’t a positive. Gathering as a large group in our host cities, plus all of the wonderful small communities that we visit as we travel across the state, won’t be safe until we can safely interact with one another in large groups. Therefore, after lengthy discussions and with heavy hearts, we have decided to cancel RAW for 2020.

Logan Foltz, May 31, 2020 at 8:55 pm

Amishland and Lakes in Indiana was cancelled. It had come within 60 days of starting, which might have been the closest for a major event thus far.

SAGBRAW in Wisconsin which had been planned for early August also postponed till 2021.

CanDak (North Dakota) is still scheduled for August 1st. According to the website the committee will meet tomorrow, so announcement may be pending.
