Hi all,
A group of us will riding for the first time this year, trying to get an idea for how a few things play out. We will have drivers, so getting our things from town to town isn’t an issue.
As far as the camping areas go … is it usually just one (or a few) main camping areas? I’ve heard sometimes people will rent out their yards for riders to camp in … how does that usually work? We will definitely partake in the festivities, but it might be nice to have an area to retreat to away from all the noise if want more than 5 hours of sleep!
I’m sure I’ll have more questions as it gets closer … thanks in advance!

Many of your questions can be answered by RAGBRAI, general info. https://ragbrai.com/about/general-information/ check it out! There will be one main camping area where the RAGBRAI luggage trucks will be located. Other groups will be camping all over town. Good luck and have fun on RAGBRAI!!!
if there is less than 15 AFTER May 1 contact the towns housing committee and request yard spce at a home. They will probably end up even opening their home up so you can use their shower & bathrooms. We had some people across the street from where we were staying just leave their house open while they were gone so we could go in and shower. We always put a tip cup in the bathroom when we use someones home, a little gift is nice too.
How many are on your team? Are you traveling from out of state to RAGBRAI? You do plan on camping?
whose team?
That’s why I wanted an “In reply to” tag so we don’t have to quote everyone to keep a conversation going. You just go up to the post you want to respond to and hit reply. Then on your post, it would start out…..”In reply to…Davy Sprocket: I think you are an idiot Davy!
Hey! That’s not nice!

At the Charter and Team meetings TJ and Wes said not to contact the overnight towns till after May 1 concerning housing and camping. RAGBRAI will instruct the towns about guide lines for the ride. If you have over 15 in your group you will need to contact the campsite coordinator. If it is less than 15 you can contact the housing coordinator or the campsite coordinator. They do not want groups larger than 15 using home sites. At present the towns are just getting there committees formed. So do not call them till May 1 as they don’t have anything planned yet. They need time to get the details worked out. The overnight campsite committee set how many and the location of the campsites. The main campsites are free. The housing committee gets local home owners to volunteer the use of there homes. The city charges a small fee to coordinate this. In general teams give the host a tip or gift. The reason they want you to go through the committees for camping is infrastructure and safety. The towns sewer and water systems can only handle so much. So the want to limit the riders at one house. They want to know locations of teams. This allows police to locate a rider fast if they need to be notified of an emergency or the return a lost or stolen item. As Mich said above. Read the RAGBRAI general information page. If you have further questions send Wes an email at info@ragbrai.org
Good windy cold white morning to Amanda,
My home is 2 years short of being 100 years old and still has the original sewer pipe leading out to the city sewer. The sewer system at a school is larger and is able to handle 100+ people taking showers at one time many times over. I just thought of all of the hair that’s being washed and going down the drain. My poor house couldn’t take all that hair and that wouldn’t be pretty.
Is It Summer? and everyone stay safe and warm
Summer, thanks for sharing that thought, Big Yuck!!!!!
Okay, that I understand. I was thinking it meant the town’s sewer system, I wasn’t thinking about pipes leading to the sewers. I guess if a homeowner can only handle say 10 people and Martha down the street has a new home and room for 30, why not? Again just throwing it out there. Guess this weather is making me ornery!
But on a happy note, the groundhog did not see his shadow, so an early spring is predicted! If you believe groundhogs . . . ;)
Each overnight town will have a RAGBRAI website up that should answer all your lodging/camping questions and provide phone numbers, email addresses and points of contact for riders, vendors and all others. The committees are being formed now!!! Give them time. I would expect the sites to be up by the first week in May.
RIDE RIGHT
Will they answer all the “hairball” questions?
