RAGBRAI LI Day Passes are still available!

So how hot was it?

I know the elevation gain and distance for this year did not make the geobike top 10 list, but it was pretty hot and humid.  Any ideas on how the temps/humidity compared to other years?

It was so hot that… I saw a squirrle dunking his nuts in a tub of ice.

Read in the paper that DM had 13 days over 90 in a row, hadn’t had a string like that in several years. Thursday broke the string with 87-88 then its been back over 90 every day since.

I used to work with a guy who would say, during a stretch of weather like we had for the first four days of RAGBRAI; “Whewwwwwwww…it is too hot be breed sheep out there today”.  Yes he raised sheep and I never questioned what he meant by that statement but we all knew it was dog-gone hot when he came up with that pearl of wisdom.

I thought we were lucky.  The sun didn’t come out in full force most days until afternoon and I was finished for the day.

Not very hot at all.  If you thought it was hot, you honestly have never felt ‘hot’.

Hotter than a two dollar wh0re on cowboy payday.

It was hot at times, but it could have been much worse and has been during past rides.  We were extremely lucky that it didn’t storm at all.

the heat did not bother as much as the lack of a breeze. thatsall i wanted was a damn breeze

Despite Noontidal’s response, it was in fact, quite hot the first three days.  Sunday had temps in the upper 90s with a heat index of about 108.  Over 200 cases of heat exhaustion were admitted to the local medical facilities after Monday.  In fact – I couldn’t ride the first half of Monday because I also had heat exhaustion from Sunday’s ride (not enough h20 and not enough food……go figure).  I was able to cool down and get enough sleep to be able to ride Monday afternoon.

Monday and Tuesday were also hot – but by Thursday, we were back to “normal” temps.

It was one of the hottest Ragbrais on record.

BTW – I live in central Illinois – I know what hot is.

I started early to avoid the heat.  6:00 was my latest start on Friday.  Also, our motorhome airconditioning wasn’t keeping up with the heat.  It was getting up to 89 or higher and then cooling down to 75 by morning.  Riding in the morning felt great.  I’m having the AC looked at when we get back to Arizona.  Much nicer back there.

According to his facebook page, even BananaMan was hospitalized with extreme dehydration and he’s from Iowa.

It was so humid during the week that even the pages on my Kindle stuck together!

I can absolutely state with a high degree of meteorological certainty, based on my own perception, recollection, and general gut feeling; that there is a 60% chance that this was officially the 4th hottest RAGBRAI since 1990.   But, let me check the computer model.

Went out today and ended up riding in 112 degree heat (actual temp).

Yeah, Rag was a breeze.

I guess it is all relative. We are from Michigan, and the heat was the hardest part of the ride. We got hot from the ride, and found tents to be even hotter. Tranfers in town were hot buses. I found the hottest we were was stopping in the past through towns. Lesson learned, never stop in the sun…….

The heat riding was not too bad, the heat camping was the problem.  Learned something this year – ride early, ride hard, eat minimally, set up camp, spend the rest of the day in the POOL!
