I’m a RAGBRAI rookie and vegan; looking for any info on food options. I am bringing quite a bit of dehydrated food as well, but also hoping to get some fresh meals as well.
we are vegan also. we eat daily at a vendor named Carbo Hut. Vegan option every day. I think they’re in the lunch towns.
dinner, you can usually find a delicious bean burrito, explore Asian vendors, or forage through a Hyvee (if there’s one in our overnight town).
we also bring a couple McDougall’s dehydrated bean soups, just in case.
if you have any other questions, just pm me on fb.
Hello! Thanks so much for the info. I am pretty good at “foraging” and seeking out plant-based options, but it is nice to know there are plant-based options after a day of pedaling :)
Carbo hut is so good! Jefferson has a vegan vendor. I can’t remember the name but I did see that on Facebook. I am looking forward to that for dinner and breakfast. So glad to find another vegan! This will be my first year as a vegan. I will be the girl feeding all the lovely cows on the route.
Every town has a HyVee except for Onawa and Sigourney. I work for HyVee and they have wonderful health markets with lots of vegan options.
Have a great week!
The vegan vendor in Jefferson is Dirt Burger :)
Amelia – I will resist the urge to open up the gates/pen for all the cows and pigs; Free Willy style :)
Dee, yes it is dirt burger. Thank you. It is so hard not to save all the animals. I just like to show them as much human compassion as I can. Iowa is the largest pork producer so it is surprising how little you will see pigs on the route. Lots of cows will be out. If you see some pigs let me know. I love them. Mostly I just see them in the trucks. So awful.
Vegetarian is pretty easy – I found most of the church dinners will double you up on veggies. And, of course, as already mentioned Carbo Hut is great, but there are plenty of vendors selling burritos and veggie wraps.
Vegan is a little harder, because you don’t know how everything is prepared.
Vegan rookie here too. Check out Better for You Bakery in Jefferson
@veganragbrai on instagram and twitter just posted a bunch of places we go. Both RAGBRAI vendors and places we love in Ames and Iowa City. We’re also soliciting more tips and finds so we can make sure everyone knows about them. This is our tenth year and we’ve developed relationships with several non-vegan vendors we know carry stuff they’ll gladly make for vegans. Come join the community!
Love this post! My last trip I went slightly off route to follow what I thought was the sound of animals in pain… it was a pig farm. I broke down in tears at what I saw.
Love the support and resources of sharing information for alternate food choices. Thank you!
I went to Carbo Hut tonight and had rice and beans with veggies and locally produced tofu and it was reaakybgood! The local ice cream vendor offered watermelon sorbet and it was labeled vegan.
Awesome thread. My husband and I are vegans registering for our first RAGBRAI next year. Thanks to all of you for paving the way.
I know the carbo hut is a veggie option, but I wish they would not serve overcooked vegetables.. Most of them are cooked to mush!
I recently went Vegan. I hope I will be able to find some decent food alternatives.
