RAGBRAI LI Route Announced on Jan. 27!

Weather Forecast

Long Range Forecast turning into Medium Range Forecast and it is looking toasty. Last 3 years have been so nice, but I have not forgotten 2012. Training in Texas Heat helps on the bike, but man, those nights are looking to be a bit brutal as of today’s forecast for Iowa’s last week in July…

Roll with it.

And with heat in the Midwest comes WIND WIND WIND!!!

Day one, riding south ought to be brutal with that hot wind coming dead in your face.

That would be nice, but La Nina’ is a wicked little girl when she gets fired up. Not hard to predict her little long-sustained moods.

Would love it if I were wrong – but I don’t think will be the case for 2016…

Cheers.

I remember 2012 being hot Hot HOT during the day, but once the sun went down, it cooled off considerably – I recall being able to sleep without too much trouble (other than the storm that kicked our butts in Marshalltown).
The forecast is now becoming Medium and Short term, so we’ll have a much better idea by the beginning of next week.
No matter what the weather is – keep this mantra: “I’M NOT AT WORK”

All Week Long. Repeat as necessary.

Right now the weather peeps are saying highs of 90-93 for the first 3 days. That isn’t hot. 100 is hot! ;)

2012 was my first year of Ragbrai, HOT, HOT, HOT and I still came back. This is year 5. IF I can survive 2012 being new and naïve, I think this year will be just fine. Iowa weather can change instantly. Just make sure to stay hydrated and find shade.

I live in Florida and been training in the intense heat and humidity. One day the temperature hit 100 degrees by the end of my ride, it was really hot! I’m hoping my body has acclimated to riding in that kind of weather. I’ve been sweating more than ever! I’m taking hydration very seriously. I’ve been riding with a camelback (70 oz. of water) for several months and developed a pretty good sense of when to drink before I’m thirsty. I also ride with a water bottle of Skratch, an electrolyte drink as well. I looked up the weather forecast and the beginning of the week may be fairly hot. Whatever it is, we’ll still be on the roads!!

powellpd – you will be fine on the bike. starting out at 6AM and relatively short distances mean you can take your time and enjoy the ride and still be in camp by noon or 1. Even in 2012, the heat on the bike wasn’t terrible for me because I got out early. It’s the day in and day out toll of being in the heat – even if in the shade – and no AC and sleeping in 80 humid nighttime air. Still an absolute blast – just not as fun as when the highs are in the 80’s.

It is what it is. Safe travels and stay hydrated.

LIke others have said, 90’s is not hot. 2012 I remember peeling asphalt and tar off of my bike from the road kinda liquefying from the heat. The fresh laid blacktop had thousands of grooves in it from bike tires. THAT was hot. I think the most adequate line I heard from that year was “Now I know what it feels like in a convection oven”

All kidding aside – heat stroke can be fatal. The older you get, the less efficient your body is at keeping cool. If the temps are as predicted, please heed the warnings and get out of the sun and cool yourself down if you start feeling symptoms – Mayo Clinic
