My 2009 Fuji Absolute 1.0 with a Jones Loop H bar and 38mm tires will be making its 6th appearance at RAGBRAI and just in time for those hills in the driftless region I’ve revised the gearing this year to a half step plus granny setup.
2003 Litespeed Tuscany with shortened stem, 25 mm tires and Brooks leather saddle. I love this thing — it rides like a Mercedes, perfect older man looooong ride bike. Does average 3000 miles per year. In the shop today for final checkup before Iowa.
1997 David Lynskey build Litespeed Vortex. Switched to 25cm tires a couple of years ago after years on 23cm.
This is the bike I rode on my first RAGBRAi in 1999. This years ride goes through some of the same areas. Including Decorah in which we overnighted there in 1999. Not to diverge but I still remember sleeping in the fields below the college dorms and some of the college students were throwing water balloons down from the dorms. The balloons literarily ripped through some tents due to the force of coming from so far above. A group of us, including a New York City cop, went up to the dorms and put an end to it. That night was also sweltering.
I may add a rear cassette with lower gears for the hills in eastern Iowa. I was able to make it in those hills in 99 so maybe not, but I am a few pounds heavier and 18 years older.
Decorah in ’99 was the hottest night I’ve experienced on any RAGBRAI. So hot, we packed up around 3:30 AM and headed out on the bike to create our own breeze. Back to the question…. I will be riding a Bianchi Intenso, comfortable, light weight ride. It will be the bikes 2nd trip on RAGBRAI.
