What is the issue around town shut down times?

I read in the letter from Matt Phippen that the biggest concern he has heard on his first week on the job is town shut down times. For someone like me who starts early and ends early each day, how big of an issue is this?

Daniel, I’m looking at both sets of maps from 2021 and 2019. I am not seeing any 3 hour advance in times. Now day 1 last year gave you almost 5 hours to go 10 miles until it was shut down at 10:45. Typically the first town was closed around noon both years the last shutdown time is 6:00. Last day shutdown is 4:00 for both years. What specific days are you comparing and are these days comparably similar on mileage?

The only time I experienced shut down times was in 2019. I finished the loop around the lake and stopped to rest after 114 miles with about 8 miles to go. I laid down under a shade tree surrounded by many riders and several vendors. I woke up when I was no longer in shade to find almost everybody gone, except a couple vendors all packed up and moments from driving away. I really needed a little water just in case. One vendor had some bottles of water near the back of the truck but I needed the exact amount cause he couldn’t make change at the moment. I only had a fifty so without hesitation someone handed the guy a couple bucks, handed me the water and said “Pay it forward”. That is how RAGBRAI works.

Thanks for the good information for a first-time rider. Where does one see the communications from the Director of Operations, Matt Phippen?

Switch from the Forum section to the Blog. This is usually the official announcements.

Lately their Facebook page has posted some announcements before appearing on the Blog.

@Joseph Schlau, are the route maps for 2018. If you look at the meeting town times they are around 3-4pm, compared with 1-2pm for 2021. That’s the 2hr difference my team and I noticed.

(Sorry for the late reply, this forum crashes on mobile for me, so I kinda forgot about it).

I responded to your post some 7 weeks ago in which you stated “Shutdown times for 2021 were a full 2-3 hours ahead of previous year shutdown times.”

The previous year was 2019 since there was no ride in 2020. Not 2018. I did not consider prior years as it is really a moot point 4 years past, on a different route with a different director running things.

In any case, the current director has stated they would re-evaluate the shutdown times for the current year and move forward from here.

I know both the shutdown times and availability of SAG services is under review in light of the 100+ mile day on Wednesday. So I am also looking forward to see what the logistics looks like for 2022.

The 2019 times were around the same (, the ’18 was just what I had buried in a bookmark. I was just responding, you had asked a direct question. I don’t check the forums that often, like I said.
