What prevents you from riding RAGBRAI every year?

OK, fully understanding that the forum is kind of dead now especially as we head into cold weather and the holidays. So this might be a slow topic and the only readers here now are super avid RAGBRAI’ers…but:

For those who are able to ride it every year, I envy you, but unfortunately not everyone can pull that off. For those of us who are NOT able to ride RAGBRAI every year, what is it that prevents you from doing so?

Is it work commitments, family commitments, the money, don’t always get around to the necessary training? Or is riding RAGBRAI every once in a while perfectly fine with you?

For me, it’s just that I have limited vacation in the summer, and my wife starts to resent it when I expect to take a full week for it every July. Can’t convince her to ride it with me (hates heat and crowds, LOL) so to keep the peace and to be fair to her, I only ride it every other year or so.

I love riding RAGBRAI. But as much as as I love riding, I hate camping. So I do it every other year. That works for me. Ride number six is set for me next year.

According to the animated video “RAGBRAI or Hawaii” there are limited excuses to skip the ride, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWHP9FleUks&t=353s (@ 0:40 minutes into the video):

“Only acceptable excuses are: Being dead, total disability, death of immediate family member, birth of a child or expected birth within ten days of the start of RAGBRAI.”

Unrelated to the above, this is one of the funnier lines:

“There will be one crack of thunder which will scare the crap out of you.”

Work has been the only reason so far. I’m trying to get my wife to go again next year, but I doubt if she will have the vacation time from work. Hopefully I’ll be retired before next years ride.

I rode my first RAGBRAI (RAGBRAI VI) in 1978, and until 2000 I only missed one (I was in jail, but we won’t go into that one).  In 2000 and 2001 I was expected to be at other functions during that same week, and by the time 2002 rolled around I had been forced to change jobs and didn’t have the free time any more.  I also started to develop some medical issues such as sleep apnea and cardiac arrhythmia.

Fast-forward to 2015 or so; I’m still only getting two weeks off for the entire year, I’m still on meds for the heart — and blood pressure too, and still need a CPAP to sleep, and I’ll be turning 65 years old in another month and a half.  As the old saying goes, “the spirit is still willing, but the flesh is weak”.

I’ve missed two RAGBRAIs in the past seven years 😢.

In 2016, the week before Ragbrai, I was in Culver City CA taping an episode of The Wheel of Fortune. There just wasn’t enough time to get back to the east coast and then drive out to Glenwood IA. Although the heat and humidity in Costa Rica, a vacation trip I won on the show, reminded me of Iowa in July, I missed the massive hoard of humanity that is Ragbrai.

Last year, I missed Ragbrai due to a “Series of Unfortunate Events” (forgive me again, Lemony Snicket!). As Daddy Woo used to say, “Life happens when you’re making other plans.”

I hope to ride again in 2020 if, as Daddy Woo also used to say, “Good Lord willing and the creeks don’t rise!”

See you along the I-O-Way in 2020.

I have ridden every year since 1999. I have a great job with plenty of PTO. I am blessed to have a husband who is very supportive with my training and my week away. He says it’s his stay vacation from me!! I am sure some year I will have to bow out but until then…

I’ve done 13 in a row and I can’t imagine my year w/o it. This year, my team was only able to do three days due to (to quote Mr. Woo) a series of unfortunate events. It didn’t feel good to only do the three. I felt like I was jipped of my summer. As long as I have the ability to stay upright and healthy, I’m doing RAGBRAI.

Nothing! Ten years in a row. I’m addicted. My family understands.

started a new job on July 1, should have just asked for the week off without pay. That was RAGBRAI 11 and it even overnighted in Ames that year. Didn’t thi9nk I would miss doing it as much as i did.

Like there not being one in 2020?

Too soon to say but that could prevent me from riding next year. I’ve not missed one since I started in 2012.

Well, at least forum users can continue to post to some topics.
