RAGBRAI LI Route Announced on Jan. 27!

"WHAT'S FOR DINNER" – What would you like to see provided to eat at overnights?

As one of Marshalltown’s eatery owners, what can we provide for you Wednesday night to help you recharge and be ready for the longest ride to Cedar Rapids on Thursday? It’s been 30 years since I rode on RAGBRAI, and back then I was just looking for carbs and calories. What are your suggestions that we might be able to provide this year?

What I would like to eat would be meat and potatoes! I get pretty tiered of pasta real quick. Maybe its just me but a good breakfast to seat down and eat would be great also. Thats my opinion.

For dinner, a baked potato bar is nice, beef & noodles or chicken & noodles are always attractive, and green salads are appreciated. I try to avoid fried foods for dinner.

If you serve breakfast, I’d love to see steel-cut oatmeal, pancakes or home-made cinnamon rolls and good coffee.

Resturants need to go to a limited menu taht night, maybe their best 4-5 items with i being vegitarian. Pizza buffets move people through quicker that sitting down to order one. Couple years ago a passthrough town had a fruit cup buffet. Chick & noodles sounds good, almost never get that kind of stuff when the chruches start serving ar 4 or 5 they are out by 6. Maybe 1 place should open then to get all the people turned away by the others. And stay open as long as you have food, don’t stop at at a certain time you put on a sign. Happened a few years ago, got to the church a couple minutes after they stopped serving and watched them carry food out and complain about all the leftovers but they wouln’t sell it.

Pasta alfredo with chicken, spaghetti with meat sauce, or lasagna. Definitely keep serving late if possible. Not all of us pull in to town early!

ditto to what others have said, and also some real meat for protein is good. Chicken, fish, beef, a good hamburger, non fried. Most riders like to eat healthy, some are vegetarians, some not, but most are careful about what they eat.

Last year we had chicken & noodles, over mashed potatos. It was awesome!!!

I second everything on mjd1221’s list, perfect for me.

I am right in line with mjd1221, give me beef and noodles over mashed potatoes. Pasta dinners are plentiful and in every overnight town.

Hey Chirpy, and everyone else. Yes, Haven is the name of our coffee house in Marshalltown. If you want to find us, head to the courthouse square where the center of activities will be. Then go one block west on Main Street, and turn north (right). We’re the Victorian “Painted Lady” with the barrel canopy over the sidewalk. We’re painted in Americana wine, cream and blue . . . and pretty easy to spot.

What is your normal menu like? Are you a full service restaurant or coffee house? Being the owner of a restaurant myself, I always like to find a local place to eat at night and not a chain.

Heavencoffee… can you post a photo of your place? It sounds ” cute”…

You can find out more about us at http://www.havencoffeehouse.com, but we’re more than our regular menu. We do custom catering, so that has ranged from an office luncheon for 20, a dessert cocktail party for 75, a Carribean buffet for 150, and a candlelit sit-down plated banquet for 200. Potentially 40,000 people looking to be fed in one evening is a whole different ballgame though.
