As one of Marshalltown’s eatery owners, what can we provide for you Wednesday night to help you recharge and be ready for the longest ride to Cedar Rapids on Thursday? It’s been 30 years since I rode on RAGBRAI, and back then I was just looking for carbs and calories. What are your suggestions that we might be able to provide this year?

Location is the king. Make it easy for people to find you and sell caffeine. In my case caffeine is generally good for 10 plus revolutions per minute and I am willing to pay big money for good caffeine.
My heart doesn’t start without a caffeine jump-start, so I understand Think that might have something to do with owning a coffee shop? We have reallyreallyreally good coffee and espresso, which can be used in all kinds of different drinks. I’d think some thing cold would be desired in July, like iced coffee, an iced latte, an iced mocha, fresh brewed iced tea, or a fountain soda. We make smoothies and frappes also, and our signature ‘Haven Frappe’ has Ghiradelli chocolate sauce and a shot of cold-brewed espresso in it, then blended with ice until smooth like a mocha milkshake.
My favorite source of caffiene is chocolate. Try one of our homemade truffles too if you visit. My wife makes them here every Sunday when we are closed and there’s more space in the kitchen!
Okay, for shawndev and anyone else out there interested, we’ll try to have some buckets of dill pickle juice stockpiled in case someone wants to get pickled sans alcohol. Since each of our sandwiches comes with a dill spear and kettle chips, there should be pickle juice available, hopefully, to anyone that wants some.
We have signed a contract that will allow us to use the vacant building across the street from us on the corner of Main Street and 1st Street for RAGBRAI. Now we will have more breathing room and seating for 150 people inside. Less of you will be sitting on the curb eating pie this way. Whoo-Hoo!
First you had me at pie, then at frappe (which always makes me think of Archie comic books as they were always going to the ice cream shoppe for a frappe), then chocolate, now this additional seating thing. Man, you’re good. :-D
Thanks Miss C! I try my best, and I really do mean try my best. I’ve been a fan of RAGBRAI for 35 years, and this may be my one chance to roll out the red carpet for you riders as a business owner. I want to do right by any of you that chooses to cross our threshhold(s).
In case anyone besides you is still reading out there . . . we experimented making a small batch of chicken and noodles this Sunday. Not bad. Not great. I’ll have to work on them to make them considerably better before I’ll consider serving them with Haven’s name on them in July. Time is still on my side.
Will you be putting signs out on the way into town. Don’t want to forget to stop in.
Lol, yeah, these forums don’t seem too busy, but that’s okay, I’m happy to talk pie until the cows come home. :-D Awesome people like you are the reason I loooved Ragbrai last year, my first year, and am now hooked. I was obsessed with making sure my money went to local people and businesses, and it’s nice that you’re making it so easy for us to do that!
We are still out here…
re the Chicken & noodle:
Didn’t you mention that you make a mean chicken pot pie? Would the filling taste good over whole wheat noodles (or regular if you must)? If so, that may be an easier thing to make for 5,000 than individual pot pies and could be a hit.

Wish I was riding this year that sounds delicious! One of those would most certainly bring me over your threshold.
Actually, yes. I have started writing jungles to put “Burma Shave” styled signs out along the road on the route from Webster City, starting somewhere after Story City, and certainly in the last 10 miles. Thanks for asking!
Hmmm, a pickle juice latte?
Maybe just fill up one of those squirt bottles of coffee flavors with some pickle juice! You might start a whole new craze.
You are tooooooo kind. Looking forward to meeting you!
Our Chicken Pot Pie filling would probably taste good over dog poo, but that’s not on the menu plan. We serve it over baking powder biscuits, and that is always a big hit. Mashed potatoes work well too, but people keep asking for noodles here. That isn’t quite so easy, and there is no way we would tackle that many individual pot pies. This has potential, and you’d be getting lots of veggies as well, unlike with beef and noodles or chicken and noodles. Hmmmm.
Come and visit anytime, not just during the ride.
