I couldn’t help notice the total lack of people packed down in the pics from 2011 gallery. Are cycle tourist a relic of the past on RAGBRAI these days?

This will be my third RAGBRAI, but my first bagging it. I won’t dwell on the fact that I could have done a fully supported charter or bought an RV for all the gear I am accumulating! Looking forward to a new experience though.
Add me to the bagger list! 8-O
Excellent, so I won’t be alone as a bagger. Bringing up the rear seems vaguely familiar from 30 years ago. Retro relic baggers unite!
Baggers HOOOOOO!!!! Just did a 20 mile test ride with full bags, under seat, I ride a recumbent, rear, handlebar bag and seat bag, felt good. Wasnt pulling my trailer, it has a flat and I need a new tube. I may not be fast but I will get from point A to point B, with all my gear.
I’ll be bagging for my second time on RAGBRAI this year. I like it because it seems to spark a lot of conversations, and I’m always happy to promote long-term touring to anyone who’s interested!
Of the baggers out there, what’s your ride and where are you coming from? I’m coming from CA and will be riding a recently restored vintage Trek with new 40 spoke Phil Wood hubs and Mavic rims. Got a set of beautiful canvas panniers we bought in NZ 30 years ago that I’m itching to put some miles on. Front ones will be hanging from some Blackburn low riders and back ones from a Tubus logo rack.
You’ll love those 40 spoke wheels with Phil Wood hubs. Mine are about 20 years old now and still going strong. By chance is your Trek a 728 Touring model? 8)
I’m coming from Phoenix with a Surly Long Haul Trucker and some kick-ass Arkels. You’ll recognize me if you see all the patches on my panniers from other RAGBRAIs and other countries I’ve toured in.
I agree on the Phil’s, I’ve got a set of nearly 30 year old 48 spokes on a tandem and never once had a problem. I believe the Trek was 1978 model 704 or 705 that I bought in spring of 79. It was a barebones frame that is getting widened to accommodate the new wheels and numerous braze-on which it had none when new.
Okay, I now have a tent, a half dome, and my REI Stratus Insulated Air Pad
, and a REI Travel Sack, still need a pillow. Thats the important stuff to me :) Also, I finnaly have a cycle computer on my bike. So I can really start grinding miles. Now just have to finish up my new set of panniers, I’m making my own. Then I’ll be all ready.
Thinking on Bagging myself, are showers and places to lay my head easy to find, that is my only real question…anybody?
BT~happy to see you’re going to be back in our fine state of Iowa in July and also will be in good ol’ Woodbine for awhile. I don’t get back to ‘Bine as ofen anymore since Mom passed away last October (at age 99, bless her) but try to see the old hometown and visit folks at Rose Vista at least every six weeks. Have a safe trip to Sioux Center and maybe we can meet up somewhere on the ride. Cheers. LP :-D
Not a problem, just ask anyone or go up and knock on a door or inquire of people sitting on a porch; in no place in the world are people more helpful than in Iowa during the last week of July.
RIDE RIGHT
Showers are not a issue………..With the towns maps …..they put on the map where the showers are. I just look for a park or area others are camped and pitch the tent. Have never had a issue.
Knees, Would be good to meet this year somewhere, I am riding with a friend that will be with “Lost & Found Charter” she will not be bagging as I am.
BT~~~I’m down in the KC metro area right now celebrating our oldest grandson’s graduation from high school (a party today and grad exercises next week) and will head back to Dodge tomorrow morning for a couple days and then back to KC for his grad exercises and then youngest grandson’s graduation from 6th grade into junior high later in the week. I’ll get a PM off to you suggesting a time and place we could meet (finally) in Sioux Center??? We will have both bagged it to Soo Center and can compare notes, huh! And wait ’til you see Woodbine’s downtown district. Fully restored and looks terrific!!! I’m hoping that RAG would go through Woodbine in the next year or two. Maybe we can exchange cell phone numbers, etc., by PM. ‘Til then, Knees. :-D
