You had to ask this didn’t you? After wasting some time researching Roman numerals online I come to the conclusion that we don’t seem to know how they handled numbers over a few thousand. People have theories, other people say those theories are wrong without offering alternatives. But surely they had to deal with large numbers in the occasional imperial census. Rome and Alexandria were both over 100,000 inhabitants and the whole empire a few tens of millions.

But I am a child of the 20th and now 21st century so I say lets ditch the Romans and go with hex. My wristband number for RAGBRAI 2C is 37DE5!
