I ride RAGBRAI because I am addicted to it. It’s my crack cocaine. BUT RAGBRAI is legal and actually quite healthy for you!

My 9th consecutive RAGBRAI in 2012 and I could come up with a lot of reasons but mainly it’s the people in Iowa who bring me back year after year and make us feel welcome wherever we go.  And some overnight towns make us feel like we just rode in the Tour de France when we ride in after a long, hot day.  And I”m from Pennsylvania so it does take a little extra time and planning to get there and back but more than worth the effort.

Iceman, once again your right!  Tammy, Pete and the PBV crew are the best!  Is it time to sign up yet?????  This year, when I first saw my tent, I thought it was a sign from God!

May I give to you, Team Road Show 2011:

If you happened to notice unicyclists or jugglers on RAGBRAI last July, it was likely the gang I had the pleasure of being part of, Team Road Show. Not wanting the ride to end, we were officially the last group of riders off the 2011 route, followed by an escort of police cruisers and motorcycles while we all chanted, “We’re number last, we’re number last!”

Great fun!

Here’s a youtube video of Team Road Show’s performance in Grinnell.

For me, I thought that RAGBRAI 2011 was simply going to be a reunion tour (reconnecting with a friend I’d made on my last RAGBRAI ride in 1981), but last July’s get together showed me why RAGBRAI becomes an annual “must do.”

See you in 2012,
~ Kevin

I bike Ragbrai because it’s the best way to do it.  Those guys on rollarblades are just too goofy.

My family hates cycling so it guarantees me a week alone each year.

ST,

Yup, my ribs are back in one piece. I’ll be looking for a safer ride from VT to IA next July. The bus rollover on I-80 was an adventure I don’t want to repeat.

See you next summer,
~ Kevin

I bike RAGBRAI because I enjoy it.  The reason I enjoy it has to do with a lot a memories from when I grew up in Iowa.  I can still remember the morning when my father talked to me about a couple guys riding their bikes across Iowa.  He was talking to me as he was reading the article in the morning Des Moines Register.  He knew it would capture my attention because as a kid I was riding my bike on a regular basis.  He followed with story with me.  The following year we followed the story together again.  We lived in Dubuque, the city where the ride ended that second year so I jumped on the ride the last day.  It wasn’t what I expected but the impact it had on me was more than expected.

My father passed away in July, 2001 and in July 2002 I did RAGBRAI with my 14-year old son as something to do in memory of my father.  We had a great time doing the 30th RAGBRAI on our mountain bikes and we made a lot of new friends along with way.  I suppose RAGBRAI reminds me of my father, the good people of Iowa, and all the friends you make doing the ride.  It keeps me coming back.

There’s not a wrong way to do RAGBRAI as long as you are being a good person and having fun.

I bike Ragbrai because:

I have memories of rolling fields of corn and soy glistening with dew in the misty watercolor gray of first light.

There is a picture of a red barn and a wire fence along a roadside culvert filled with forsythia and day lilies.

I cycled through a field of clover and was intoxicated by its perfume.

I saw the sun set over the ball yard in Dyersville where “The Field of Dreams” was filmed and I know I will be back.

It will become a pilgrimage, Iowa, Sweet Iowa.  (c) LRamp 1989.

I bike Ragbrai because I stil did not complete the hole ride.

That was my goal for 2011 after my 219 lbs weight loss.

All I got done in 2011 was 2 1/2 days of riding.
