RAGBRAI LI Route Announced on Jan. 27!

Zombie Burger

So just curious. Hubby and I are burger lovers and I stumbled upon this place. It is in Des Moines. Just curious if any of you guys have been there and is it worth stopping at. I read some reviews and they seem very mixed. Any places we should stop at as we travel to the start? Since this will be before RAGBRAI starts don’t have to worry about it being on the route.

My favorite Maid-Rite place is Taylor’s Maid-Rite in Marshalltown. Walk in, take a look around and notice all the old-time stainless steel equipment. Great food, they have been in business next to forever and really nice people.

Maid-Rite is a loose meat hamburger. The name is from the chain. There are other names for this type of sandwich- tavern – canteen

Oh Mich – your poor, misguided, would-be chili eater. That – – – – they sell in the Queen City is not chili. I’m not sure what it is, but it sure as hell is not chili. If they served that out here in West Texas – get the rope!

You mean, in Texas, they don’t put the chili on top of spaghetti and cover it with cheese and onions?????

That’s right, Sandaltan. And while we’re at it – real chili does not have beans. They are just a cheap filler to make it go further.

I will admit that I am intrigued by Maid Rite “burgers.” In all the RAGBRAI’s I have done, I have never tried one. Going to have to get one of those.

Sandaltan:
No ketchup on a Maid-Rite, only pickle and mustard. Ok, onion if you must BUT I CAN’T WATCH THAT DESECRATION!!!

Since I adore pickles and mustard and cannot stand onions that is no problem for me!!

Come on down. Our passport office in Austin will give you a visa for a temporary visit.

I have been told that real Texas Chili is made using one of these…minus the horns of course.

I get the idea, Sandaltan. At least its not a picture of the A&M mascot (a mongrel Collie dog). And yes, that’s probably what you are eating if you buy canned chili (i.e., Bevo).
