Fresh fruit and piles of waffles in Brooklyn
- 29 July, 2011
A bunch of fresh fruit awaited riders in Brooklyn this morning, including Jessica “The Orange” Routier, Morgan “The Grapes” Hawkins, Taylor “The Apple” McDaniel and Jake “The Banana” Wilson. The costumed fruit salad was raising money for their local church youth group and seemed surprisingly fresh despite their lack of sleep. They’d woken as early as 2:45 a.m. to assemble their costumes and prepare their fruit stand.
Just up the hill, John Morgan of Algona was manning no fewer than 32 cast-iron waffle irons. His operation, Dad’s Belgian Waffles, has served RAGBRAI crowds for more than a dozen years and this time showed up with 132 pounds of pasteurized eggs, 48 gallons of syrup and enough butter – 84 pounds – to make Paula Deen consider training next year’s ride.
The secret to his recipe is extra water, which produces a light and airy result.
“That’s why they love me,” Morgan said.
