Girls try to collect every signature on RAGBRAI

Mackenzie Redmond (left) and Audrey Powers show off the signatures they've collected.

Clarksville, Ia. — Mackenzie Redmond and Audrey Powers are on a mission to get a signature from everyone on RAGBRAI.

They might not succeed in getting everyone, but they’re doing pretty well.

The 10-year-olds handed a rider wearing a Iowa Hawkeyes jersey a marker, and Redmond held out her sleeve for him to sign.

He laughed and added his name to her bright blue Clarksville RAGBRAI shirt.

She and Powers, wearing a matching yellow shirt walked off.

They haven’t counted how many signatures they have, but by 9:15 a.m. both of fifth-graders had managed to fill a Clarksville RAGBRAI shirt and were well into their second shirts.

The girls have known each other for “a really long time,” they both said, looking at each other and giggling.

So they came up with this idea to create their own souvenirs.

“We thought it would be a good way to remember RAGBRAI,” said Redmond, who is from Marion but is visiting her grandparents for the week. “I’m going to hang it on my wall!”

“Oh, me too,” said Powers, of Clarksville. “We’ve never seen this many people,” she added, and both ran to find more people.
