Growing up we would visit Iowa to see my Grandparents and my Grandpa’s wife made the best gooseberry pie. I can’t find it in Colorado.
I am always first looking for pure rhubarb pie, then on to rhubarb mixtures( strawberry, raspberry, etc) then on to berry pies. I rarely need to go further, but when you NEED a piece of pie, you can make anything work.
Gooseberry. . but the gooseberry I had on RAGBRAI last year was way too expensive and didn’t have but about two gooseberries in a whole piece. I was SO disappointed.
I loved this pie stop! The table went on forever and 3 pieces were in order before we left!
I think my favorite RAGBRAI Pie moment occured in 2006.I don’t recall the name of the town, but it was in a big field adjacent to an old church southwest of Iowa City. On one end of the field the church ladies had baked up an array of pies which included every fruit and berry you could think of, (including several which were new to me.)The slices were devoured under the shade of a tent adjacent to a mobile stage with a Blue Grass Band performing. Great RAGBRAI memoryies!Great pie!
Raspberry is the best way to savor pie, with a STRONG cup of coffee. Raspberry ice cream from Beekman’s is a good addition too.
