Here’s what you need to know about 2020’s RAGBRAI XLVIII

We know you have questions about the ride, registration, merchandise and more. Here are those answers.

Will RAGBRAI still happen?

Yes. RAGBRAI is not going anywhere. Our commitment remains to donate $50,000 to the University of Iowa’s Stead Family Children’s Hospital. We’re proud of the good RAGBRAI has done for the state and look forward to another great bicycle ride and strong partnerships with Iowa communities to raise money for good causes.

When will new staff be in place?

The Register is moving quickly to put people in place. We’ll update you as soon as we’re ready to make an announcement.

When will registration open? When will the route be announced?

Registration is planned to open in November. We’ll be assessing the overall timeline as we get the new team in place.

What if I have a merchandise order outstanding?

Email info@ragbrai.com with your name, address, what merchandise you ordered and when.

Can I post on the forums on RAGBRAI.com again?

Yes, those are active again. The forums were temporarily shut down Tuesday until staff was in place to answer your questions.

Why did RAGBRAI make the donation to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital?

RAGBRAI supports many charities annually and was glad to pledge $50,000 to the hospital in this year’s fundraising effort.

Who is the contact for communities that submitted applications to be part of the 2020 ride?

Any questions from communities should be directed to info@ragbrai.com or Anne Lawrie, at (515) 284-8388.

How do I contact RAGBRAI?

Email info@ragbrai.com or call Anne Lawrie at (515) 284-8388. We’ll also continue to update everyone on RAGBRAI.com and RAGBRAI’s social accounts — if you don’t already, follow us on TwitterFacebook and Instagram to keep up with the latest.

I was RAGBRAI CREW. what do I do now? One would think RAGBRAI Would reach out to crew members. I speculate I won’t hear a word

Following is the text of an email that I sent out to the members of the Team that I organize every year. We’ve done Ragbrai 21 years and it’s a tradition that me and my friends and family rely on every July.
Hello Team White Bus!

If you haven’t seen the news yet, there’s drama going on concerning Ragbrai. The leader and all the employees of Ragbrai resigned this week and decided to form their own ride called “Iowa’s Ride” to compete with Ragbrai during the exact same dates as Ragbrai. They have announced a northern route already and will announce the exact route in November. Ragbrai, of course, doesn’t announce their route until the last Saturday in January.

Well darn! What to do? Sign up for the “new ride” before 1/1/20 and get a discount? Or wait until Ragbrai’s route is announced in January and pick which one we want to ride?

Here’s what I think! This is all pretty fresh news! It’s several months before EITHER ride. I want to wait and see what other information comes out about this. We have plenty of time. Ragbrai will have a response to all of this at some point and I think it is wise to wait to see what that response is.

My gut feel is to continue with Ragbrai. This new ride seems like a ride designed to be punitive and vindictive to a former employer, not a ride designed to promote biking in the State of Iowa. That said, I think it is prudent to wait and see. More to come from me. Stay tuned.

Proud to be your el Capitan!

Please establish a peace. Dividing the ride helps no one. RAGBRAI is special and a civil war is too destructive. Allan Brecher MD

Bummer that you people let TJ get away. Do you have a plan? A ride director? Anything? It’s like everything Gannet touches. Run it into the ground. Fools.

I hope RAGBRAI decides to pick the same route, and same dates, as Iowa’s Ride. That would avoid splitting up groups of people who just want to ride together. I’m guessing the Iowa State Patrol would approve of a “unified” route. Let the two sponsors duke it out in arbitration or in court, if necessary (doubt).

I have been in 30 Ragbrai’s. I have earned a voice in this. I also met my wife on Ragbrai and we have been together 20 years. I feel the other ride will be unsafe . There will be a lot less riders on the other ride and a lot more auto and truck traffic. The public will not take the other ride seriously and ignore the ride. I predict a lot of accidents. This is TJs fault. I look forward to many safe Ragbrai’s.

I have been a RAGBRAI rider for 11 years with members of my family and friends. For one week we can just ride our bikes stopping along the way meeting new people just wanting to ride! Only decisions you have to make are where to eat, potty, and throw my tent! I love knowing some of my favorite vendors will be there. For myself I know I will have Toms Turkey sandwich and their Smoothie for lunch at lease 3 times in the week! I know at least once my daughters and I will share a pork chop from Mr Pork Chop! I will get to stop at vendors along the ride and eat meals in churches! What I don’t have to decide on is which ride to go on! It’s the same time every year I just have to know where to be left off and where I am going to be picked up! It is heartbreaking that we now have to make that choice and so do vendors! I am sure there are lots of people like me who like things the way they are. It’s been iconic for years! Let’s keep it that way!

Why was the $50,000 donation made from Ragbrai and not from the Des Register?

Randi Rogers, Nov 7, 2019 at 10:52 am

Hey RAGBRAI, do you have a plan? A ride director? A clue? Time’s slippin’ away. Gannett and the Register are running this like they run newspapers, which is to say into the ground. It’s on you to step up and so far you can’t seem to be bothered. No wonder TJ left!

Ragbrai Nation, Nov 10, 2019 at 2:25 pm

If this whole thing doesn’t boil down to ONE ride across Iowa by this summer, as I expect it will, then it most certainly will by 2021! Throughout TJ’s tenure at Ragbrai I have not seen eye-to-eye with him, but since Carson King I fully and wholly support him now!

Carolyn Stanek, Nov 15, 2019 at 2:55 pm

I’m in. It’ll be my 7th RAGBRAI, many more to go. Thrilled to see such quality charters as Pork Bellies, CUBS (Chgo Urban Bicycle), Brancel and many more are doing the right thing. Sad to see people who collected paychecks from the Register during the last year–all the while planning to hijack this event and claim it as their own–use the CK controversy to solicit support for an alternate ride.

Bruce Sanders Lehnertz, Nov 26, 2019 at 8:40 am

Looks to me like it’s just a pissing match. The new ride sounds like nothing more than some pissed off bozo vs. I’ve done 3 RAGBRAIs … ‘88, ‘89 and ‘90. I turned 65 this year, and it just seems like it’s time to do it again.

And I can’t imagine that the ride I do would be organized and led by some jackass holding a grudge.

If I register and then drive out to drop my car off at the end of the week long ride. How do I get myself and my gear to the start of the week long ride?
