Aplington-Parkersburg High School may be known for its football program, but its musicians were the stars during RAGBRAI’s visit today. Ten members of the A-P Junk Percussion Ensemble pounded away in a parking lot along the route.
“We use buckets, pots, pans, brooms, basketballs – you name it,” A-P band teacher Thom Mahler said.
The group has practiced a couple times a week for most of the summer and hopes to use proceeds from RAGBRAI to buy new equipment. They placed a donation bucket on the ground next to a battered brass baritone, a relic from the tornado that destroyed the high school in 2008.

Very Cool— I especially like the footwork of the 5 gallon bucket brigade!
This is great. What a great idea from your band director. It was so nice to see so many young people involved. Aplington Parkersburg has been a great mentor to the state of Iowa and everywhere. Thank you. Keep “drumming” away!!
