I certainly heard a few times over the week, if this is the 8th flattest, I don’t want to see a hilly route. If the elevation data used to calculate this is different than in years past, then you really can’t make an accurate comparison. It would be fun to reevaluate the old routes with then new data and see how things changed.
I like this idea. I try to buy local when ever I can. Normally it turns out good, sometimes not, but either way, I support the local organizations that don’t get a chance to fundraiser like this often. It seemed harder to me this year to tell who the locals were in a lot of towns. Maybe some didn’t have any, I don’t know.
I have had a couple host experiences that didn’t work out great, but mostly over the years they have been great. This year, I applied for two, one I didn’t hear back from and the other said the Middle School was excited to host us. We ended up somewhere else that day. I know that hosting us is a side thing compared to the rest of RAGBRAI, so I…[Read more]
We have arrived and see people setting up camp. It is sort of strange, was told camp ground is closed but they would let us camp if we went where told. I feel bad for the guy we talked to, as he was told they didn’t need to open the camp grounds until tomorrow. Not sure where that ball got dropped. It will work out, but sort of strange.
I heard back from CB. They will not officially open the camp grounds until Saturday morning, but we are free to camp in them Friday. Since they won’t apparently be completely set up, if you take a spot they plan to use for something, they may ask you to move.
Council Bluffs DM’ed me on Twitter, and then posted that their campgrounds do not open until 6 AM on Saturday. This is a first for me, we have arrived on Friday for the last 13 years and always been able to camp in one of the camp grounds.
I am not sure yet what we will do, but it is too late to change plans and not arrive on Friday.
That is fairly unusual, but I have seen it before, and I fear it is becoming a little more common. I can pay for a lot of generator gas for $50. I expect we will be staying somewhere else that night. I enjoy RAGBRAI, love helping the local communities, but don’t like to be taken advantage of.
I have not found anything yet on Saturday afternoon/evening mass. Some years, there is info on a special mass Saturday at the start town for riders. We have been to mass at football stands, gyms and the occasional church.
Normally it seems there is a strangler or two, but this does seem a little worse than normal. Unfortunately, while I do now archive the old maps, I didn’t start in 2011, so I do not have any copies of the Atlantic map from then.
It depends on the town and campground. I think proper RAGBRAI Team buses might have a better chance to park in the tent only campground than a traditional RV does. I have seen buses at the RV places. I have seen lots of them in driveways and parked next to parks, campgrounds and every other random place you can think of. If you make no plans,…[Read more]
At this point, all spots you can get a reservation for are pretty much taken. Are you sleeping in the bus or in tents around the bus? I have seen many buses and trailers parked on the street next to a park. Tents get set up in the park close to the bus. Most RVs end up in parking lots of one type or another.
Yes, you can camp Friday night, maybe even Thursday night. Our first year doing RAGBRAI, we arrived Saturday. Every since, we arrive Friday. It is nice to get in and have a down day before the ride starts. It is amazing to see the place go from empty to packed Saturday. I’ll get in the last minute shopping, get my gear sorted, spend some time…[Read more]
Jake – I sent you a direct message, but the system isn’t good about notifying you sometimes. The fist option is to get you to mail a check to my cousin, who bought both of the wristbands. As the team leader I have them, and can mail them to you. Then everything is taken care of before the ride. Otherwise, we will have to try and figure out how…[Read more]
