We have 2 team members starting mid week. They could either use a ride Wed from Keokuk to Centerville to join in the ride, or, they could drive to Centerville mid week and then need a ride back there Saturday after we end. Does anyone have some space?
This will be year 15 for the team, every year with an RV. All but one of those years my Mom has been our driver, so she knows more than I. It is amazing some of the places she has found, and where she has parked their Motorhome. One year, I talked a buddy into driving my 5th Wheel when Mom and Dad were in Houston for…[Read more]
Each of the overnight towns generally start publishing maps on their RAGBRAI websites in the next few months. Some will have early maps up and then update them later, others don’t publish maps until close to the ride. I build a binder for each year with all the maps printed out for each town, along with any other specific information…[Read more]
I’ll throw in a couple of non communication tips or ideas.
1. Leveling boards. Often times, RVs end up parked in odd locations on RAGBRAI. The ground can be much more uneven than you may be used to. Make sure you have a good supply of boards, blocks, or what ever you chose to level. Even with auto leveling you sometimes need them. You also…[Read more]
My first year, we got in Saturday afternoon to a whirlwind of activity. Since then, I have tried to arrive Friday afternoon. It is the one quiet time I get on RAGBRAI, the start town is fairly peaceful. The Expo on Saturday is worth spending some time it, as many of the vendors are only there that day.
I would love to try staying the night at the ending town, but the drive back to Colorado is too long so I have to beat feet as soon as I have dipped. I wish the last day’s rides were shorter, just to help get on the road quicker.
With this being our 15th year, I feel we have the logistics of RAGBRAI fairly well sorted. Of course, when every you think you have everything figured out, someone throws you a curve ball. I have a couple people that can only ride the last ~3 days. Does anyone know of options to get them from Keokuk to I am guessing Centerville? Or to get them…[Read more]
I am generally not a huge fan of crowds. Typically, if it is going to be crowded, I reconsider if I want to go. RAGRBAI is different. There are lots of people, but it is very spread out. Many of the towns we pass through, if you want a little quiet, just walk a block away from the activity area, you will almost always find some shade and just…[Read more]
While I have not done GOBA, members of our team have done it twice. They enjoyed it, but it is not RAGBRAI.
The only negative thing I have heard is they really don’t like RVs. We have used one for support on rides since we started RAGBRAI. Not only were they not allowed in near the official camp, but the organizers would provide no help on…[Read more]
Every town it different. Some have greeters/directors where the support driver route enters the overnight town. They will then direct you to the designated camping areas. Some are not as organized. Most both have maps on their websites before the ride starts you can download. Some also bring maps to the night before town, so you might be able…[Read more]
I’ll throw out a couple of quick tips now and think about making a longer entry later, maybe on the team blog.
If at all possible, have him go to the driver’s meeting. After several years, Mom stopped going to them, but for the first several she when. It should help give some foundational knowledge, and they have in the past provided updated…[Read more]
A couple of our team members had some trouble paying yesterday. Since I manage the team, I haven’t tried yet, and most likely won’t for a couple months. Fortunately, we have a little while to get it sorted out.
