Well, the Dome Strange approach is not exactly what I had in mind… I’ll typically be starting about 6a and rolling through the day, partaking in ‘the chaos’ a bit when it suits. Big fan of Adaptive Sports Iowa…riders. Very inspirational. We’ll look for you all along the road.

Craig: I’ve asked this question a couple of times this spring but no responses so far. I’m also planning a self-supported ride this year and thought it would be nice to flow through the week as well. I’ll be starting Saturday from the Missouri River in Sioux City. A couple of others have indicated an interest is doing that as well. Not exactly…[Read more]

Sure, hydration and electrolytes for many reasons, but a fair bit of research thinks cramping is more related to overuse. So, more training, both endurance and technique, would be the answer. Maybe its just too early in the season yet?

Melissa – I’m late to the conversation, but just in case…for me resolving the issue was a simple as tightening the strap closest to the ankle (so the foot won’t push down into the toe box) and loosening any straps around the ball and arch of the foot. I use both SPD and Look-type clipless system/shoes but I think this would be true for any type…[Read more]

I’ll second brewmeister.us. Though my current pad is the REI Co-op Stratus. Half the weight of self-inflating and packs half the size. Takes a few puffs to fill so no pump required.
aredgar replied to the topic to helmet or not to helmet??? in the forum RAGBRAI XLV – 2017 6 years, 3 months ago
For me its definitely helmet, regardless of what the event sanctions require. My doctor-friend had a solo accident on a rail-trail. With his helmet on it would have been minor but instead he sustained significant brain trauma and has lost his career as a result. Even moderate concussions these days take people off work or unable to continue…[Read more]

At the MS150 we learned about 95deg and all-day headwinds, unexpectedly cold nights, and thunderstorms that drove us off the course. Good practice for RAGBRAI!

Next weekend is the Minnesota MS150. Great charity & a good chance to exercise the new touring setup.

Jonathan and Tyler: I’ve been planning Sioux City to Orange too. Name a rally point and we’ll see you there. If others have specific recommendations on a good route please join in.

I’ve enhanced Coach Ertl’s training log for my own use and thought I’d share it for those who are interested. It contains Ertl’s recommended target miles and I left entries for my mileage from the last couple of weeks as examples. Download from here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B_2SHpQauyeMMlhNX3RzdUxmUVE . File is Excel 97-2003 or…[Read more]

Tim – Don’t let the magpies give you a hard time – there’s nothing wrong with planning or using the right tool for the job – especially first time with 12 humans and associated vehicle(s). In fact, the better you plan the more relaxed everyone is likely to be. I’ve travelled with C’est la Vie groups and it usually means a lot of wasted time and…[Read more]
aredgar replied to the topic What do you Carry on your Bike? in the forum RAGBRAI XLV – 2017 6 years, 6 months ago
In addition to everything mentioned – I carry laminated cards in my handlebar bag, 1 per day, with route details, what I want to see in pass-through and overnight towns, and directions in overnight town from RAGBRAI route to host site and back to route (came in very handy at the end of a long day and at 6:00a each morning in an unfamiliar town).…[Read more]
