I rode RAGBRAI for the first time two summers ago. It was on my bucket list for over 20 years (I first heard about it from an Iowan who was on a cross-country ride with me), and it was even better than I hoped! I know you have had a lot of responses already, but here’s my two cents:

I know I can hire a charter bus, but the Quad Cities airport is less than an hour from the end town. Does anyone have any idea how easy it would be to hitch a ride (just me and luggage–no bike) or grab an Uber from Clinton to the airport in the afternoon of the last day?
Is it easy to get from Davenport to Quad City International Airport? Do I need to sign up in advance with on of the charter airport shuttles, or will there be a million cabs and Ubers heading that way all afternoon?
I made the mistake of flying into Omaha on Friday instead of Saturday, and there are no shuttles to Onawa that day. I’m looking for a ride to Onawa (just me and a bag–no bike) on Friday, 7/20. Let me know!
Thomas, I can’t say this is the “best bike style” as your question asked, BUT I rode cross-country on a 35 lb. hybrid and I lived to tell the tale. I’m toying with buying a new bike after all these years, but I will probably ride my trusty hybrid once again. Almost every long ride I have done has been mostly road bikes, for what that’s worth.
I have not received any good information yet. So far, there are no shuttles on Friday. Uber costs over $100. There’s a bus from Omaha to Sioux City, Iowa that passes right by the exit for Onawa (which is less than a mile from there), but they told me they would not make any unscheduled stops.
I looked at some of the host town websites, and a lot of them have “campground reservation” sections. I thought “free” campgrounds were part of the regular RAGBRAI event if you are a registered rider. I understand that some companies (like Pork Belly) have their own campgrounds/meal plans, etc. for a fee, but do I need to reserve a campsite every…[Read more]
