It would be great to form a GF team, if only to have to daily food options. Maybe next year… 🤔
Only if someone hasn’t sprinkled breadcrumbs on them. 🙃

Hey, neighbor? Holler if you’re nearby and want to ride up in the bluffs.
CB trail updates as of 3/31:
The LM trail between East Manawa and the Wabash Trace is open but you have to cross the tracks at the grade, the trail as it winds under the trestle is a mess (the fence “cage” is flattened).
Also, we’re probably still at least a week or two…[Read more]

John replied to the topic Only 7 miles of gravel on Gravel Loop? in the forum RAGBRAI XLVI – 2018 2 years, 8 months ago
IIRC, my recon ride earlier this spring was ~12.5 miles of gravel (out of ~18.5), but it’s not like there’s a shortage in the state.

I ride 23’s all the time never had a pinch flat, If you inflate your tires properly you won’t have issues.
I ride 25s or 28s and larger and, if set up tubeless (or with latex tubes), pinch flats are a thing of the past, even at lower pressures.
I couldn’t imagine riding across Iowa on 23s at 100+ psi but obviously a lot of people do every year.

Rob, it depends whether you are shipping your bike (using SendMyBike.com or similar) to the start town or bringing it with you already assembled to the PBV shuttle busses. More information here:

On day three, the Sacred Heart climb out of the Des Moines River valley into Boone will certainly wake up your legs if they aren’t already.
But that Ledges climb looks like a doozy, about a quarter of a mile really steep climb, including three or four short sections of almost 17% according to our friends at Strava.
The thing is that, other than…[Read more]

Check to see if any Davenport bike shops plan to run a shuttle for the last part of the week?

Based on some comments made by TJ on the Just Go Bike podcast, I get the feeling they aren’t looking to expand the size of the preride. Probably wouldn’t hurt to join in for a day if, like Andrea, they were literally starting or ending from the town you live in.

Be aware that large events like RAGBRAI will seriously overstate Strava heat maps routes:

There were several segments from last year’s RAGBRAI where we rode routes that were semi-closed to vehicle traffic, that might not be advisable for a normal commute. Tuesday where we rode 20+…[Read more]

gringonick: I loved Clear Lake back in 2014. Everyone should stop at the Surf Ballroom! (Google if you don’t know why.)
Really psyched to have Clear Lake be an overnight town this year. What a great town.

OK, fellow wheeldippers…
It looks like a 45 mile round trip from Orange City to Harwarden and back via Highway 10. Does anyone know if the boat launch near the Harwarden firehouse is public access?
Another option would be the 48 mile round trip via 420th St. to the public boat launch to the Big Sioux at Oak Grove Park. Looks like a ton of…[Read more]
