David, I use sendmybike.com which is owned by Pork Belly Ventures. I ship my bike and a “medium” size shipping box from California for around $300 round trip. Your bike and box will end up at the PBV camp in the start town, all you need to do is put it back together. Joanne, You need to go to the website of each of the overnight towns for housing. Be warned, housing is not guaranteed, especially in the smaller towns. I would suggest that you give serious consideration to either join a team or one of the charter services. See you on the road.
This will be my 4th RAGBRAI and I have yet to get a flat. I have always made sure to put new tires on the bike before I ship my bike to Iowa. I ride on 25mm Continental Gatorskins. My experience has been that the Ragbrai route is well manicured.
