This question comes up year after year and usually multiple times each year.
In my opinion, a first timer – especially a first timer riding alone – ought to use an outfitter the first time. The structure will allow you to decide for yourself exactly how, in subsequent years’ rides, you want to experience RAGBRAI. Not using an outfitter for your…[Read more]
Yep, only food vendors who sell out of their permanent buildings take credit. Having said that, I have never found it hard to get cash. If a bank’s ATM is out, go to a food store. Come on, you’re not riding on Mars – it’s Iowa. And if by chance the ATM deals you a $100 bill, I guarantee the next beer court or permanent restaurant will break it…[Read more]
My goodness. Lots of angry chatter (both ways) over gluten free on RAGBRAI. I see all this antipathy as yet another aspect of some folks being politically correct/sensitive and others who are tired of having to be pc. RAGBRAI is just supposed to be fun, right?
I would think that it would be fairly obvious that not many (any?) roadside RAGBRAI…[Read more]
I have an aluminum bike, a carbon bike and a titanium bike (I have formerly owned a steel bike). The aluminum is clearly the least “comfortable” riding frame although I see – probably because of costs – that better designed aluminum frames have appeared in the past four or five years. Still…..
I prefer – everything considered – the ti frame to…[Read more]
Fox Mulder: Exactly. If the readers on this Forum think any past RAGBRAI ride was harder than Ride the Rockies, let’em go try RTR once. That’s not to say I like it better than RAGBRAI, I don’t. It’s just something you have to do at least once, whereas RAGBRAI is a ride you want to many, many times.
I care a great deal about hot water, even in hot weather. That water coming out of the ground in Iowa is so damn cold it could awaken the dead!
That’s one reason I prefer Pork Belly Ventures on RAGBRAI. They have their own shower trucks. I think the DMR makes them offer the showers to non-PBV riders but that’s never been a big deal. In all…[Read more]
I’ve ridden (on non-RAGBRAI rides) with Bubba and you’ll like him. Great guy. After you do RAGBRAI a few times, you’ll have a better idea if you like his charter or whether you want something larger (e.g., Pork Belly) or something smaller (e.g, a team with a bus) or maybe Bubba is just right. I prefer Bubba on smaller rides.
There’s usually one hill on each RAGBRAI I remember but keep in mind that the ride, while 7 days long, will never be planned as a “tough” ride (it can be, if it is hot or windy, but any ride can be tough in that respect). The DMR does not want to scare off the crowds so you can bet that as the average age of riders increases, it won’t get…[Read more]
I know you will not want to hear this but….diets generally don’t work, at least not for lasting changes. It takes a lifestyle change. And frankly, to take off weight in big numbers, you should have started last summer so you could do it gradually. So all I can tell you is to resolve – today – to do the entire RAGBRAI and take your own time…[Read more]
I generally like to ride when it is cooler even though I ride in the heat at home quite often (we have no choice; it’s hot all the time).
My suggestion is to keep an eye on the temperature forecasts. I don’t care how much heat you ride in at home, if the temps are in the high 90’s or 100’s for three or four consecutive days, you need to ride…[Read more]
At least this route is south for a change and not a route parallel to the mid-state interstate highway. So many of the routes in the recent past have been like McDonalds restaurants – plain, predictable and just not interesting. But I suppose that’s why so many people like that sort of route since they know what they are getting, albeit not so…[Read more]
Ladies and gentlemen – let’s face it. This year’s jersey is a bust. The colors are muted and the helmet looks like – well, I’m not sure, maybe a horse jockey’s helmet but certainly not a proper bike helmet. And those wheels – pretty amateurish. I’d say it’s ugly except for being so dull. I hope there are plenty of clever clues built into the jersey.
Mr. Excited, it’s pretty clear to me that what Mr. Iceman is saying is that RAGBRAI is the premier, week long ride in the US. Its jerseys should be the premier jerseys every so often but he does not think they are. I have to agree. They are nice but nothing special. I like them but no one has ever walked up to me and commented on how nice my…[Read more]
Mr. Moots, just because Sara has a “team” does not mean they have the logistics down (unless they have their own truck or van). If they used the DMR trucks, they would still need to schlep their bags around each day, find the shower trucks every day, and most importantly, would have to figure out transportation compatible with a three or four day…[Read more]
