I think the only time I would bash someone for doing IR only would be when they start going on a diatribe about the DMR and Gannett being corporate monsters. This would ignore the fact that the “corporate monster” has been the parent company of the DMR AND RAGBRAI since 1985 and they never had a issue with it until this year. Same thing with the…[Read more]
While I agree with Jose and Luv 2 Ski that IR was created in questionable circumstances, I won’t bash anyone for wanting to do both rides. Two weeks riding in Iowa is a luxury I wish I had the time to do.
Frankly, no one really had an issue with this for the previous 47 years. It’s just a ton of fake outrage generated by people who just aren’t fans of the DMR or Gannett. I think I’ve said this on a previous post but it seems to me that the small host towns tend to make a lot of money because they don’t necessarily spend the same type of money the…[Read more]
JL, I may have said this before on this post and others, but my anger on this entire situation stemmed from how it divided a previously undividable (if that’s a word) biking community. The people in the biking community here in Iowa hold all kinds of political views but when you are out biking together none of that political division comes up. I…[Read more]
Isn’t this a bit hyperbolic? How are opinions on a forum harmful? As lovers of all things RAGBRAI and all things cycling, don’t we deserve some answers in the thought process over at the IBC on why they felt the need to endorse a ride that hadn’t even started yet? Personally, I feel it was very short-sided. Am I happy about the IBC being back in…[Read more]
My guess is that RAGBRAI wants to have IBC as an active partner in the future. While I agree that it’s a good idea to bring IBC back into the fold, I still stand behind my earlier statement about the IBC leadership.
This is why I feel Mark Wyatt should step down as head of the IBC. His credibility and the credibility of the IBC has been tarnished by this. I no longer feel he can adequately lobby or be an advocate on behalf of cyclists in the state of Iowa.
I too would have started RAGBRAI earlier than I did. My uncle has had a team since the late 90s and had brought up the idea of riding it in the past. I always blew the idea off. Why in the hell would I want to ride a bike across the state? Oh, how little I knew about how it would impact my life.
