Council Bluffs really f’ed up this year. Our team was originally placed about 8 miles away from the expo area, at a retirement facility with several other groups, nowhere near a shuttle stop. So we ended up finding a different camping spot on our own. And Council Bluffs wasn’t the only town to do that to our group. Yet all the big charters got…[Read more]
I talked to the Walmart store manager, the top guy, on Monday, July 8th. I asked about RV parking and camping, as well as long term parking. They have a huge lot and I figured as long as you picked a spot as far from the entrance as possible, it wouldn’t be a problem. He said that after 24 hours, they may tow your vehicle. He said RV’s are…[Read more]
I for one would trust a local news source over some email newsletter from a charter service. Not to mention that I bet TJ would fight to the bitter end to make sure we can dip our tires in the actual river, not some pond in some park.
Patience. This is year 11 of using hosts. We have yet to have a single town not get back to us with a place to park. The latest we have ever heard has been 4 days prior to ride start. You will hear back assuming you filled out the forms and paid the respective fees for each town.
Every overnight town will have an official RAGBRAI campground available for any registered riders. In the past, people have “tagged along” and surprised hosts with more people than they expected. This has been so much of a problem that TJ actually discussed it in the team meeting this year. He said if it becomes an issue, they could pull your…[Read more]
That being said, my personal stance on aerobars are leave them for the training rides and triathlons. There are just too many people of widely varying levels of skill to be using aero bars. Being able to grab brake levers in an instant might just keep you out of trouble.
I would like to offer up my RAGBRAI experience as an alternative. I have never used a charter. I do remember being in awe of the scale of the PBV tent city on my first RAGBRAI 12 years ago. Not knowing what the deal was, I approached after spotting beer. The guy at “the gate” rather rudely asked if I was a part of that group. When I said no,…[Read more]
2. Can I ride for just a couple of days instead of the full week?
Yes. To do this, you would enter for a one-day wristband for the day or days you would like to ride. Day wristbands may be purchased for $30 (plus tax) per day. You can register online until June 1st. Day wristbands are not…[Read more]
Backpacks equal back sweat to me. It is hot enough out in the open in the middle of Iowa in July. The towns are close enough together that you can get anything you need along the way. The first year I rode I carried way too much stuff.
This is my 11th ride and here is what I carry:
Freezer Ziplock bag (sandwich size) holds my phone, cash,…[Read more]
I lived in Cedar Rapids for almost 10 years. There was a group that did a bar hop ride on Wednesday nights. They talked about RAGBRAI. Me being from South Dakota, I had no idea what it was all about. So that year I loaded up my Raleigh M30 Mountain bike with everything I thought I would need to ride a day of RAGBRAI. I rode down my driveway…[Read more]
