Tagging on. Yes – they charge but I agree with Amanda – always very reasonable in my experience also. And very knowledgeable, efficient, and somehow have all of the parts that you could possibly need. But the lines are long. Especially at the ones right at the beginning of towns…So if you are not in “emergency mode”, use the ones that are…[Read more]
I agree with the idea of driving like so many have suggested. If you do decide to fly, I might suggest flying into Chicago and shipping your bikes either to Chicago or to the end town. The flight will be more cost effective than Des Moines or the end town, which may not even have an airport… Then use Brancel or another charter to…[Read more]
Here is what I may be able to do…
I work very near Melrose Park…I can pick up his bike and get it to Clinton with me…
But…I am taking Brancel Charters across the state to Le Mars – so my car stays in Clinton.
I suggest you call Bob Brancel of Brancel Charters. Explain the situation. He may be willing to help – and I can drop off both…[Read more]
Agree with all on no back pack. One other suggestion: I use a relatively small trunk bag that attaches to my rear deck. In it I keep a spare tube, lube, granola bars, and most importantly my flip flops and a baseball hat. At every town I stop in, I take off my bike shoes and helmet, and put on my flip flops and hat. It gives my feet and my head…[Read more]
Just FYI: I recently called the YWCA in Clinton and they will be offering up their locker rooms for showers at the end of the ride. As I am a member in the Chicago area, I used the Y in Davenport and again in Keokuk on past rides. It was the best $5 I spent all week (if I ignore beer cost.)
I completely concur with Brandi. My first two Ragbrai rides were also 2018 and 2019. I ride solo, I use the baggage truck, and camp in the general camp grounds with everybody else. To each his own and I can completely understand using a charter service, but for me, I will always use the truck, and only use a charter to get across the state. From…[Read more]
Forgive me if I am repeating anyone, or if this is already obvious to some or most, but I was having the same issue. I did receive an email from Ragbrai on 5/4 that I was picked for the lottery.
No wristband number or anything on the email, just a reference to the EnMotive site.
So today I started looking for this…not on my phone but on my…[Read more]
If you are still looking for riding companions, let me know. I may join If you are depending on schedule / etc. I would probably drive myself just in case I want to back out a day or two early. Plus the whole COVID thing…Lmk.
Jboz / all:
I’m a little late to the game here, but if you are still going i may be interested – I just picked up cycling three years ago, I’ve done Ragbrai twice, and really have missed doing Ragbrai this year – and as Eric put it…not having a goal has also limited my need to train. I’m 55, live in the NW Chicago suburbs, went to Iowa State…[Read more]
I may be. I’m from the Chicago (NW suburbs) area and have done RAGBRAI twice. I Was really looking forward to the end of July but…we all know that story. Lmk what your thinking. Iowa is fine with me, as long as we can figure out logistics. Illinois is fine too. Or Wisconsin. I have yet to do an unsupported ride, so I will need panniers/ etc. a…[Read more]
All good ideas above…just one more suggestion on this: What I ended up doing last year was buying a trunk bag that I put on the rear deck and then carried a pair of flip flops with me (among other things) to walk comfortably in the towns. Every time I stopped for any significant time, I took off my bike shoes and socks, and put on my flip…[Read more]
Oops. I did mean council bluffs – sorry for the confusion. The Uber idea is only because I didnt know where we are camping on day zero (Saturday) in council bluffs – if we are right on the river that would be perfect.
No promises yet, but I like the idea of Amtrak. My wife said she may be able to pick me up in Keokuk at the end of the ride. So tentatively, I may do Amtrak out to Omaha (your idea), Uber to Clinton / start location, tent/sleep that first night, ride seven days, and my wife would pick me up in Keokuk. With your bag and tent. This will be my second…[Read more]
Grace – I am from the Chicago area and will be going back Saturday after the ride. My wife is dropping me off in Davenport at the start town next weekend and then coming back to pick me up on the 28th when we are done. One of my other riders (John from Hawaii) just backed out a few days ago – so I now have room for 1 more. Let me know –
Just a thought for those of you who want a shorter trip that you can say is ‘technically’ a tire dip in the Missouri River…I am sure I will get some negative feedback from the purists on here, but what the hell: There is a lake called Blue Lake just west of Onawa. It surrounds Lewis and Clark state park on three sides. It is an ‘oxbow’ lake.…[Read more]
I do have room from Davenport to Chicago on the Saturday / end of ride. I did send you a message on this earlier in the week with my contact info if you are still interested. Let me know when you decide what you’re doing!
