Here is what I did a few times:
After the days ride, I went to the truck and grabbed my bag. I found a place in the main campground to set my bag. I took everything out of it that I needed and just left it there, amongst all of the tents, ususally against a fence or someplace obvious and easy to re-find. I grabbed it the next morning, replaced…[Read more]
Andrew, No Ordinary Life, and Roxanne: I would definitely join you for dinner. My cell is (630) 363-4955 so set up a group text on this if you would. I also agree with everything else said here. I ride solo also, and I like it. I meet a A LOT of people along the way and have never felt ‘solo’. But I have often thought of ways to meet other rid…[Read more]
I have also been successful charging my phone in the overnight camp grounds when they are in parks, etc. with gazebos or other public structures. Someone almost always has a strip outlet plugged in so that multiple people can charge. And then others daisy chain their strip outlets so you have like 20 phones charging…I’ve left mine there all nig…[Read more]
I am in Palatine. But I would be at O’Hare as I work there and would normally leave early / mid afternoon from around there. Can you get a ride to O’Hare? If not I could come to Oak Park. Fairly close.
Suzanne: You have summed it up quite nicely. No need to freak out. Just get there. And then roll with it.
It’s hard to explain why that week July is so much fun. But you will soon see, like so many others who have said “one and done”…and every year we decide to come back…Enjoy the ride!
Suzanne / First Time Rider: I agree with everything said by others. If you are with a charter, your camping area should be well signed on your way into town so that you are guided to the correct location. If you are with a team, they should be giving you an address or a location that you should be able to find. Based on your post, however, it…[Read more]
Tagging on. Yes – they charge but I agree with Amanda – always very reasonable in my experience also. And very knowledgeable, efficient, and somehow have all of the parts that you could possibly need. But the lines are long. Especially at the ones right at the beginning of towns…So if you are not in “emergency mode”, use the ones that are…[Read more]
I agree with the idea of driving like so many have suggested. If you do decide to fly, I might suggest flying into Chicago and shipping your bikes either to Chicago or to the end town. The flight will be more cost effective than Des Moines or the end town, which may not even have an airport… Then use Brancel or another charter to…[Read more]
Here is what I may be able to do…
I work very near Melrose Park…I can pick up his bike and get it to Clinton with me…
But…I am taking Brancel Charters across the state to Le Mars – so my car stays in Clinton.
I suggest you call Bob Brancel of Brancel Charters. Explain the situation. He may be willing to help – and I can drop off both…[Read more]
Agree with all on no back pack. One other suggestion: I use a relatively small trunk bag that attaches to my rear deck. In it I keep a spare tube, lube, granola bars, and most importantly my flip flops and a baseball hat. At every town I stop in, I take off my bike shoes and helmet, and put on my flip flops and hat. It gives my feet and my head…[Read more]
Just FYI: I recently called the YWCA in Clinton and they will be offering up their locker rooms for showers at the end of the ride. As I am a member in the Chicago area, I used the Y in Davenport and again in Keokuk on past rides. It was the best $5 I spent all week (if I ignore beer cost.)
I completely concur with Brandi. My first two Ragbrai rides were also 2018 and 2019. I ride solo, I use the baggage truck, and camp in the general camp grounds with everybody else. To each his own and I can completely understand using a charter service, but for me, I will always use the truck, and only use a charter to get across the state. From…[Read more]
Forgive me if I am repeating anyone, or if this is already obvious to some or most, but I was having the same issue. I did receive an email from Ragbrai on 5/4 that I was picked for the lottery.
No wristband number or anything on the email, just a reference to the EnMotive site.
So today I started looking for this…not on my phone but on my…[Read more]
