Since starting this thread I have been very impressed with the response of the the RAGBRAI forum members. Civil yet passionate, informed and opinionated. Exactly what I was hoping for considering this is not necessarily an earth-shaking issue but is still something we need to be aware of. I very much appreciate the viewpoint of RAGBRAI being first…[Read more]
OK, here is something to perk up the forum. We have seen a huge increase in electric assist bikes around here, and I imagine we will be seeing an increase of said bikes on RAGBRAI this July. I have an opinion concerning this, but I am more interested in what the forum community has to say. Is this the beginning of the end? Will this allow folks…[Read more]
Our group is doing its best to change this! We all dress in costume every day, and we dance at every opportunity. Bling, Uncle Sam, and the two big babies will be riding and not racing every day, and we do our best to encourage and support every young rider we pass(or are passed by).
KenH, thanks for speaking so eloquently regarding this being…[Read more]
Assuming you have found a team to officially join. Now if you are also looking for a fun group to ride with during the day, our team is not difficult to find. We have two dressed as babies, one in gold bling and top hat, and one in red white and blue sparkly Uncle Sam getup. You can often find us dancing to the local music in the park. We ride…[Read more]
Hard to pick a favorite moment but happened upon a group called The Spacemen in Ionia. 13 year old boys playing ACDC and killing it! They need to be a featured band next year. That downhill into Charles City in the rain was nasty. Lots of bikes went down when the patrol would suddenly stop the bikes to let vehicles through the intersection,…[Read more]
I do not have grade % or anything like that. Nothing as steep as Potters Hill but some of the hills are well over a mile long according to my odometer. Mainly wanted to get it out there that Saturday, while not a long day mileage-wise will be a day to be ready for climbing-wise.
As we are riding right through my back yard this year, I thought I would give some hill info for the Friday and Saturday portion of the ride. From Cresco to Decorah, it’s mostly rolling with one nice downhill just before Decorah. I am unsure of the exact route through Decorah, but there is a possibility of a couple of horrifying uphills climbing…[Read more]
Team Wheeler is in and ready to roll. Last year we had two big babies and one glittery top-hat and cape. This year look for a baby head with red flashing eyes, two cheerleaders and one as yet unknown but worth the wait costume.
KenH: Yes, that was John in the vest and sparkles. This year we will be back and he claims to have found a new and even more interesting piece of headgear to wear. We are planning on bringing guitars again this year so look for us. A bass guitar is of course always welcome!
dalebob: In 2014 I rode with 2 side panniers and one behind the seat (recumbent) loaded down not with camping gear but an electric guitar, amp, and various rhythm instruments. … In another we had a trumpet and banjo show up.
Hey, I caught that show and loved it! One of you wore a sparkly gold vest or jacket and a top hat that year and last year w…[Read more]
In 2014 I rode with 2 side panniers and one behind the seat (recumbent) loaded down not with camping gear but an electric guitar, amp, and various rhythm instruments. Weight of the bike and equipment was around 65 lbs and except for the rainy day carried it every day. My friend John did the same and we would stop in the parks and play for whoever…[Read more]
