Actually, we did very well last year. Unfortunately, I can’t return this year because I’ll be training for the NYC marathon, but my wife will be back, and we’re looking forward to another tandem RAGBRAI.
We also met many tandem teams out there, so that was pretty inspiring. :)

https://ragbrai.com/routemaps/2017-route-maps/ lists some of them just below the red DAY N banner.
Day 5, RAGBRAI jersey day. Day 6, college spirit day. Don’t see anything about clubs, so if someone knows that, I’d be curious to know, too.

Thanks for the recent replies! Question though: on open roads, we’re going ~13mph. Do you know what speeds you’re going if leaving later but still catching up? It’s easy to catch up if one can crack out 25mph, but well, not us. :)

For the last week, what’re people’s recommendations for tapering? My plan is:
1, first and foremost, get lots of sleep;
2, if #1 happens, go for an easy 22 or 25 miles on 7/18 and 7/20.
I’m used to tapering for marathons, but since biking isn’t high-impact, I’m not totally sure what to do here.
David Leung replied to the topic What did you do this week? in the forum Training 6 years, 2 months ago
7/1: 55.07 miles, 1516 elev, 27.53 ft/mile
7/2: 31.35, 1459, 46.54
7/3: 22.76, 335, 14.72
7/4: 38.96, 731, 18.76
So the 7/1 ride was like Days 1, 2, and 4; the 7/2 ride was like Days 5 & 6.
The 2900 of Day 7 is still a wee bit terrifying. :)

We got ours yesterday (6/29, in Boston, MA).

Yeah, we’ve been doing all our weekend training rides on our tandem. Heck, last weekend, we were in NYC and we rented a tandem to do 40 miles. That was weird: it’s a rental tandem, so more about cruising than going places.
Oh lovely, braking uphill. *sobs* I’m used to using my momentum to carry me up. Well, okay, character building, sounds…[Read more]

*nod* Yeah, we’ll definitely be leaving a comfortable amount of time to get our stuff into the truck because we don’t want to be Those People. :) Knowing that alarms are going off around 4:30am (or even earlier) is super helpful!
Hmm, getting 8+ hours of sleep is going to be tricky. My wife is an expert at naps, but for me, naps tend to reset…[Read more]

RAGBRAI newbie here; my wife and I are going with Pork Belly Ventures, so if there’s a notable different answer from PBV peeps (I wouldn’t expect so, but well, assumptions), let me know.
If I’m reading this chart right, sunrise at RAGBRAI is right around 6am, and it starts getting light around 5:30am. I know PBV wants us out of our tents by…[Read more]

I’m behind but (hopefully) back on track: 644 miles, 9,123 climb, not counting a few stat bike sessions. First RAGBRAI for us — we’ll be on a tandem; my wife is the stronger cyclist. I’m slated to break 900 by the end of the month and 1,300 by the last weekend. Weekend rides are usually on the tandem; midweek rides on my solo.
Speaking of…[Read more]

Got it. July’s weekend plans are 55/25, 65/30, and 75/50 miles. The 65 and final 50 are doing variants on the Sunday ride (2005 foot climb).
We’ve thought about trying to stand while pedalling, but I’m not super comfortable doing that on my solo, soooo yeaaaah. On Sunday, we, ah, verified that our lowest gear works! :)
Oh right, and normally…[Read more]

Hey, all — first time doing RAGBRAI, so I was wondering if experienced people could say whether I’m on-track or not for training.
I should hit 900 miles by the end of June, and ~1300 before RAGBRAI. This past weekend was:
Sat: 30.0 miles, 2:33:00, 11.8 avg mph, 514 ft climb (solo bike) https://www.strava.com/activities/1030471348
Sun: 47.8…[Read more]
