I went to visit family in Cedar Falls over Sturgis Falls weekend and watched The Pork Tornados. Really good, so I’m looking forward to them. Hairball seems like a favorite by a lot of people but I think they are a little overdone on the ride, and also unnecessarily really loud. Don’t know much about the other bands.
I bought a cheap velcro wallet, I keep around $60 cash, ID, a credit card, insurance card, and emergency contacts in mine. Put it in a zip lock and carried it in a jersey pocket. Works pretty well for me but after looking at a couple of the other products mentioned here I might have to look into one of those. The Jersey Bin looks nice, I like…[Read more]
Good article from Iowa Craft Beer Tent. Like I said in a previous post, I think it’s a mistake for many reasons to not allow vendors along the route. So somewhere in the middle of the ICBT article, TJ’s article, and the county’s ordinances there is a happy medium. Each side might not be completely happy with the ending but there has to be a…[Read more]
Has anyone done any research for any type of attraction in any of the towns or along the route that would be worth stopping and checking out? Or anyone from the areas we will be going through with inside knowledge of some must-see spots?
I don’t think TJ’s comments came off as thinking people don’t pay vendor fees. What I got out of it is that every town has a vendor fee and sets their own price that these vendors pay, and that some counties charge a vendor fee and some don’t for any vendor that sets up outside of town. SOME vendors naturally take advantage of that and want to…[Read more]
No trails here either so all my training is done on the road. I don’t listen to any music so I can hear something approaching and not scare me when it passes. I try to wear a bright fluorescent yellow, green, orange, etc shirt and also have a blinky. Cyclists aren’t overly common on my roads so I try to be obnoxiously visible to drivers who aren’t…[Read more]
I could be wrong but I think some of the people might have dipped their tires at Harper’s Ferry and not even continued on to Lansing. But I think a vast majority of people haul a** to the last town so they can get out of Dodge and head home. My team usually gets in fairly early, gets cleaned up, goes back to the route and then we stick around to…[Read more]
I would try to find a team to join personally. I was going to use the RAGBRAI trucks and services when I first started but luckily I found a local team that took me in. I know a lot of people are fans of charters and if you have the money to spend on one then that would probably be a very good option. I didn’t/don’t have the money for a charter…[Read more]
Realistically everyone would be walking past the hospital so I don’t know if crashes would be a big concern. The early and late riders may be able to ride through. Since it would be an all day parade of bike that would give more patients opportunities to watch, even from their own lower level room if it faces the street, something they can’t do…[Read more]
I have an idea if it hasn’t been thought of already by the RAGBRAI crew, any possible way to have the route go past the Children’s Hospital on our way through town so the kids can get a wave from 15,000+ bike riders? Logistics might be a nightmare but they shut down that area for every home football game so a lot of the same logistics would apply.…[Read more]
Due to some work conflicts I don’t always get a chance to do a lot of training. Last year I did about 150 miles of training, no major hill training, and the longest ride was about 15 miles. I didn’t have any major issues either. But I did take a day off in middle of the week, more because of the rain forecast than anything physical. The year…[Read more]
I had no rhyme or reason for my Madrid and Coon Rapids pick. Just looked on a map and found some towns that looked about the right distance away from each other. And I didn’t want to pick a bunch of stops that have been overnights numerous times already, I like to hope we would go to new towns.
Just to echo Mike Cordes’ response, I said pretty much the same thing in a different thread. I’m from a past start town, hopefully again in the future, as well as good friends with our town’s mayor. He told me the same thing, the town doesn’t make any money, it’s all local businesses and various groups that make money. If anything, the town might…[Read more]
This was my second, last year I said I was going to spend more time in the pass through town than I did my first year. I improved to a point but I think I can do even better on that next year. Also I want to stop at more places of interest along the route. For example, this year there was the Surf Ballroom, the hobo museum, and others that I…[Read more]
I hope no one took my posts as me taking offense to any previous comments or nay saying any of the other vendors. I’m a resident of a past overnight town and hopefully an overnight town again in the future. I’m also a week long rider. My attitude towards everything on the ride is “it is what it is.” As Ken mentioned, a vast majority of the…[Read more]
Also, I find it a little funny that some people are implying that a county/town/group is money grabbing but then they say nothing about the crazy high prices they pay for stuff at the vendors. And most of the vendors are with the ride all week charging those high prices, the towns only have a few hours to make money and most of the time are…[Read more]
Being from an overnight town and having several in the area that have been overnights as well I can kind of confirm some of the things T.J. has said. Granted, every town does it differently, but most towns that I know of make very little, if any, money on RAGBRAI. I don’t know about the county aspect of it but I would assume it’s similar after…[Read more]
