There was a time when the official mileage was roughly between main campgrounds.
That has not been true for some years now. Me thinks this is not by accident.
That way RAGBRAI can promote the ride as shorter than it actually is, which is better for business, and business is booming.
The ride started as a whim. Karras & Kaul sold the idea as…[Read more]
For us the fiasco in Sigourney was the Kybo situation. We were fortunate our group was assigned to the park/swimming pool a few blocks west of the square. My sympathies go out to all those stuck out in the back forty, ( Expo Grounds ). However for a camp of 1200-1500 riders we had a mere ten Kybos.
This was Davenports 3rd time in the last eight years. I missed the last ending, but before that they had all the charters ride approx. 3 miles up the trail along the river to a large parking lot next to a casino. That route was infinitely safer than this years.
Not sure why the change, but there has to be a safer place and route to finish up…[Read more]
After giving up on the 1/4 long line to dip our tires, we proceeded to our groups assigned staging location. Little did we know that would be a 4 mile gauntlet to North Park Mall onto Hwy 61 / Brady St..
Forcing riders onto a 4 lane one way road with cars zipping by at 45 mph is nothing short of asininely negligent. That kind of total…[Read more]
Skunky is right, Hwy 17 can get busy. However, the last time we road out of Boone the Flat Tire in Madrid had something like 4,000 riders show up based on the wrist bands they issued. Most of those riders came down Hwy17 so drivers were on alert. Not bad for an off route party.
For years I have been using nubutte chamois butter made by inyangi out of Boulder Co.. I fear they have gone out of business because all attempts to reach them online gives me an error, then sends me to a website in Japanese. What I really liked about nubutte is that it was not water based so it lasted all day, and the essential oils would not…[Read more]
Thanks for the input. I discovered the problem. I normally just browse the latest discussions and that page doesn’t allow you to start a new thread. You have to click onto one of the categories at the right to see that box.
Hwy 17 has a 4ft. wide paved shoulder so traffic should not be an issues. Just watch for gravel at crossroads. At Madrid the bridge is approx. 3 miles to the west and well worth it. If you stay on the trail east to Slater and take R38 north it hooks back up with the route. Be sure to check out the Flat Tire in Madrid, and the Night Hawk in…[Read more]
I don’t use GPS, I use MAP. That and my bike computer lets me know within +/- a half mile of where I am at all times. But hey, people like there toys and if that’s your thing so be it.
The only thing I ask is don’t try navigating your gadgets, including phones, while you are riding.
Otherwise your GPS might earn you, or someone else, a visit…[Read more]
For 28 years I have been fortunate to not have a bad encounter with a dog. I ride a lot with my wife and if She yells at them, they usually turn tail and run. Unfortunately my wife was not with me 2 weeks ago and I didn’t see the dog until he was almost to the road, and I got bit. Not bad but it hurt like hell. Good news, the dog was current…[Read more]
I’ve gained weight, lost weight, and stayed the same on Ragbrai. I don’t worry a whole lot about it because I’m on vacation. Besides, experience has taught me that if I eat normal when I get home and continue to ride on a regular basis, my weight is back to normal usually in 7-10 days.
There is no Guilt in gaining a pound or two on Ragbrai.…[Read more]
It’s awfully quiet out there. Normally by now someone has picked up on some scuttlebutt from a local or a city council meeting. Maybe towns are getting better at keeping a secret, or everyone’s holding out to win the guess the route contest.
My first RAGBRAI was Sioux Center to Burlington. It was a rather circuitous 495 mile route. They can always find miles to add. TJ has trended toward shorter routes, so I would say split the difference and your in the ballpark.
Okay, instead of being wrong by only a year or two, it might have been three or four; maybe five.
However, I can say absolutely, positively, without a doubt, there was probably no official jersey when I started in 1990…. maybe.
