Kudos to the organization. More KYBOS this year with much shorter bathroom lines. More community food services in smaller towns. ( Sometimes in the form of a large common booth for several local organizations ). I would discourage small towns from selling shirts. Unsure if this is pushed by RAGBRAI or a town leader idea. Most riders do not have…[Read more]

The death rate we are seeing in exposed populations is about 3 %. That means 97 % recover and survive. I agree with many others there are higher risk during RAGBRAI ( like wiping out on a road crack and hitting your head or food borne illness mentioned ).
Many teams contact people they know for private camping sites. The city has arrangement to be an overnight town and plans a certain zone of camp sites. Some of these teams are assigned by RAGBRAI to a certain zone of a park/ camp site. They pay individual registrations and team vehicle fees for privilege of assignment. These teams pay for extra…[Read more]
During the route the the bikes would be unlikely to be stolen at roadside stops as everyone comes in and leaves with a bike. Would be hard to leave with 2. So you don’t need to lock up the bike. During overnight towns I would recommend locking bike. Even if it is just locked to a friends bike, it stops ride offs. Bike theft is very rare on RAGBRAI.
My 18 year old daughter purchased the Trek Crossrip for RAGBRAI last year and completed it with flying colors with her friend. I have used my Cannondale road bike and Xcross . I prefer the cross bike as the slightly wider tire ( 32 mm ) helps avoid dropping into the rare , but occassional crack. I have been witness to a few wrecks from cracks. The…[Read more]
I would strongly encourage the wrist / ankle ID’s. We had a gentlemen have cardiac arrest during a club ride in the Quad Cities with successful resuscitation. We saw the benefit and now encorage the use of these at the beginning of club rides.
There is a company called Blackburn that makes a compact but light weight camping lantern with built in rechargeable lithium battery and a back up alkaline battery compartment. The device has 2 USB ports that can charge your phones. If the lithium battery runs out you can use disposable AAA batteries to charge your phone. This device has been a…[Read more]
The past several RAGBRAI events the group has overwhelmed to available cell towers in these small communities and have crashed their systems. Even when systems are working, service is intermittent. Can temporary cell systems be set up so phone service is functional for the riders and the local residents. ( Hoping someone in charge can see this)
Hoping to see Maddie Poppe back. She missed last year due to her American Idol win. Her ABC contract will be up. I hope to see her in an overnight town as opposed to the pass through towns she was at in the past. Always fun to see Hairball.
During the ride bikes don’t need to be locked at stops in the country. Everyone else came in and leaves on a bike, so it would be hard to steal a bike. In small pass through towns my wife and I lock our bikes to each other. There rare theft is usually a local riding off. Over the night we lock to a tree or fence when available. We lock 2 bikes t…[Read more]
