Next time, try Casey’s: they may be more likely to have ibuprofen than a fire department.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I ship my duffel bag to the start and stay in motels. It’s normally a two-day ride for me, but I’m splitting day one into two days this year.

Who else is riding to the start? What’s your route? Mine is DSM/Waukee/Adel/Redfield/Dexter/Stuart/Menlo/Casey/Adair/Anita/Wiota/Atlantic/Hancock/Underwood/CB.

As I recall, the first RAGBRAI death occurred in 1984. Keep in mind that what works for one person doesn’t work for others. I leave each day at 8:00, regardless of the temperature forecast, don’t wear long sleeves or cover my helmet vents, and don’t use a tent fan. Somehow, I’ve survived 35 rides.

Don’t worry, you’ll be fine. Take your time, stay hydrated, and enjoy the experience. Seeing riders of all ages, and particularly those with physical challenges, on the road each day has a certain uplifting effect, at least for me.

I would get on the Chichaqua Trail at Baxter, follow the trail system through DSM to Redfield, cut down to Dexter, and follow the RAGBRAI route to Atlantic. From there, I prefer the most direct route to CB, through Hancock and Underwood.

If any of you old-timers would like a 1984 (RAGBRAI XII) “FEE PAID” plastic disk with chain, I have an extra one.
Send me your mail address and I’ll forward it to you. It predates the separate baggage tag and bike/rider bands; I can’t remember where it was to be displayed. I have mine attached to my duffel bag, along with my other tags.

Catfish Bend is in Burlington.

Army surplus-type duffel bags work well. Attach something eye-catching to the outside to make it easier to spot in the baggage area. Put all of your clothes in sealable plastic bags.

“Yes” to the mosquitoes (most years) and lock (at night–leave it in the duffel during the day), “no” to the dishes/utensils. Bagging is a personal choice: some people swear by it, but I’d rather avoid schlepping 50 extra pounds around all day.

(1) Corn fields serve a dual purpose.
(2) My late friend “Moon” brought his banjo for years. Ukuleles are welcome!
(3) Pay attention to the time you loaded your bag on the truck in the morning: that will determine its general location on the ground when you arrive.

1. You could use a charter service or try to find someone who’s driving back to the start. Posts on rides will be appearing as we get closer to the ride.
2. I don’t know of anyone in the tent campground who “makes” dinner or breakfast. There are plenty of dining options downtown or in/near the campground.
3. Showers are available in/near the…[Read more]

Please don’t follow the above advice regarding eating at a church dinner before showering. We may smell bad all day, but there’s no reason to spoil everyone’s appetite at dinner by stinking up the joint.

Sorry, I was a little off-topic, just suggesting other possible main routes. I’ll let the gravel aficionados speculate on their loop. Anyway, I think that it’ll be a tough first day.
jelly0317 replied to the topic Gravel loop in the forum Miscellaneous 9 months, 3 weeks ago
I would guess that the mileage/feet of climb would be similar with an Underwood/Hancock or Oakland/Lewis route.

I don’t know if they still have it, but they used to offer “The Best Seat in the House” promotion. One lucky ticketholder got to move from his seat to a recliner next to the press box.
jelly0317 replied to the topic What's the "Official Campground" like? in the forum RAGBRAI XLVII – 2019 10 months, 1 week ago
The main campground is usually at the high school or fairgrounds. Showers, food, and shuttle stops are nearby.
