Thanks for the input. Not sure how my grandma entered into the discussion but never mind. I understand that there will be some jerks both on the road and at the campground. I do not think that wearing earplugs or riding at dawn to avoid them is all that can be done. The organizers need to own both of these issues to a greater extent than they do…[Read more]

This was my first ride and overall it was a great experience. Memories of the few bad moments are crowded out by the many cool things that I experienced and the overall good vibes of what seems to me a unique social event. But I have not been able to dismiss a couple of concerns that developed during the week and that I think the RAGBRAI…[Read more]

I did the gravel on 25mm road tires. I probably walked at least a mile. I gather that it was a looser surface than ride veterans-this was my first-had expected. I was glad I did it and would do it again. It was a chance to see a geologically interesting area from my favorite perch. I ride a fair amount on unpaved roads while doing club rides in…[Read more]

A-ha! Thanks. Will try to get a plate in Onawa.

“Music for Airports,” old Brian Eno. Works for me. Rock on!

I got what I took to be a license plate in my packet. It is a plastic rectangle, has the RAGBRAI logo and spaces for personal ID info and band numbers and a flexible loop I assumed was for attaching to the seat post. Is there something else that folks are calling license plates?
Joe Stalvey replied to the topic Flying in to Omaha on 7/20 – Anyone want to share a ride to Onawa? in the forum Looking for RIDES 2018 2 years, 6 months ago
Pork Belly Ventures runs shuttles on Saturday to Onawa from the airport. It costs $40. Tammy Pavich at Pork Belly can walk you through signing up. tammy@pkbelly.com

I am a solo rider planning to arrive in Omaha on Amtrak at 11 pm Friday. My plan is to get a room at the airport or elsewhere to hook up with the Pork Belly shuttle to Onawa next day. Anyone with a room reserved or planning to get one interested in splitting the cost, and the room, that night?

Alan, I think more people will see your entry if you click on the “looking for rides” header and then scroll to the bottom. There will be a box for starting a new thread. Good luck. Seems like a lot of people from Chicago on the ride.

Thanks everyone! My tiny tent lacks a vestibule, so I will try to get a site with a tree or other solid object to lean it on. And will hope not to stomp on spokes of any supine bikes getting back to my tent in the dark. Yikes.

Theft was not the concern-just logistics. Wondering how bike can be ‘parked’ without a rack or tree very near campsite. Guess I’ll find out soon enough.

First-timer question here: What is the most-common solution for parking your bike overnight when camping? (I am not with a charter.)

Is that Betty as in Black Betty? They sound like a fun bunch. What is the best way to connect on the ride? Do the forums continue? As you may have guessed this is my first time.

How rough is the gravel loop surface? I have 29mm road tires that are fine on the unpaved roads I often use in upstate New York. Not sure how well they would take heavily rutted surfaces or any deep gravel.

Hi Jean. Thanks very much for the offer. I will be glad to throw in gas and coffee money. What is your ballpark time of arrival in Chicago? And any chance of dropping me at Union Station before the airport? It might be a clunky 10 mile walk or subway ride with a bike and 50 pound bag otherwise.

Anyone have vehicle space for rider, bike and bag going to Chicago on Sunday? I am catching a train there.
Joe Stalvey started the topic Davenport to Galesburg Amtrak station in the forum Looking for RIDES 2018 2 years, 7 months ago
Anyone going to/through Galesburg (Ill.) either after finishing Saturday or early-ish Sunday? I am catching a train there at 11 am Sunday. Also/or, is there any public transit or Uber/Lyft service that might help? Any tips appreciated.

Hi, Phil. My name is Joe Stalvey. Do you still have space for a rider and bike? If you are going (or can go) by the Amtrak station, I am getting a train from Chicago Sunday evening. I was going to board at Galesburg, Ill., but a ride would be nice.
