Jboz. Great post. I remember a family of four that the parents wanted to get their teenage kids away from the video world and made them go on Ragbrai as a family. The kids were not happy about it . In a couple days, the kids were having such a great time that they were getting up BEFORE , Mom and Dad in the morning and on the road. I think they…[Read more]
Ok , true story time. The secret on any tandem is harmony with the two riders. In 30 years of Ragbrai,I have seen loving couples and then couples that find out for real who the other person really is. True story. On one of my early Ragbrais , I was with a group that had two young couples on tandem bikes. About the 3rd day on Ragbrai we noticed…[Read more]
Lauren , I am sure you can’t go wrong with many of the available Charters. They are all good. I have been in 30 Ragbrais and I met my wife on Ragbrai 21 years ago. You are safe. I am going with Pork Belly Ventures this year for the first time. I am very familiar with them. I have used their showers thru out the years. I should have started using…[Read more]
Reedkennethia , Thanks! People don’t realize there is a lot of that going on. I think it is going to get worse .If the right people had not stepped in , we would only be looking at the Iowa Ride as the replacement , which I would never do. I had to change Charters myself and happy I did. Ragbrai is now here to stay.
Sorry but it did not. Families and riders in most cases can only take one week vacation and can’t do as a family for two weeks, riders have to choose one or the other, team busses can’ be in two places at the same time to take their riders back to their homes and who is going to drive. Support ? Etc. Riders changed Charters. Etc. Why are’nt All…[Read more]
Thangamalang ,If I can save just one bike from this experience it would be worth it. I do not remember the town. It was a town square and this happened across the street. Riders were laying down in yards with their bikes but this group decided to lay their bikes on the driveway. It was just a group, I do not know if it was a team. I do remember…[Read more]
There are other times you have to worry about your bikes. I was in a small town and a bunch of riders laid their bikes down on someones driveway and went across the street to the park. I was right there when all of a sudden the garage door opens up and a car backs over about ten bikes or more. We had a terrible time pulling those totalled bikes…[Read more]
I have had the opportunity to meet and talk to Dieter a few times and it sounds like he has Big plans and surprises in store for Ragbrai. He would not elaborate ,just like when I was trying to trip him up on spilling some of the overnight towns. He said ” nice try “. I see big and different surprises coming. They may not all come this year. He and…[Read more]
Scott , I have heard rumors about why the Ragbrai logo this year is showing a rider with his / her guitar on their back and and the motto is “on the road again ‘ I heard the new crew is stepping up their game . I have gone to meetings. There was an estimate of 38,000 riders from Winterset to Indianola last year. We are expecting big time…[Read more]
Oh boy! Are you single ? Party all night downtown. I know riders that do not go to sleep and start riding in the morning .They get to the overnight town and go to sleep. They wake up around 10:00pm and party all night long and repeat. Overnight towns will contract big name entertainment . I am not into the party scene but I met my wife 21 years…[Read more]
2newknees , this might be funny now that we have told everybody about US Cellular being the best in Iowa. We may now have 30,000 riders switching to US Cellular and now we won’t be able to get thru. Funny !
The problem here is, John , you do not know the REAL WHOLE story about the start of the Iowa Ride. I live in Des Moines, Iowa and have first hand knowledge of what happened. Some of us are very protective of Ragbrai. I have seen families break up that have ridden for years together. I have seen clubs breakup. Teams fighting over team busses over…[Read more]
