I haven’t heard anything either. I see on the enmotive site that I’m registered, but you can be registered & not be selected in the lottery, right? I thought that if we rolled over our registrations from last year, we were guaranteed a spot? Do I remember that wrong?
I think the initial post captures the state of affairs quite well. There’s no ride like RAGBRAI, no ride with the history, the traditions & the pageantry of RAGBRAI. As an out of state rider, who doesn’t watch ESPN or read the Register except in the last week of July, I had never heard of this controversy until the September email. I think TJ over played his hand by assuming that thousands of people would be upset enough to abandon RAGBRAI & ride a completely new unknown ride across Iowa. It appears he’s figured that out since he changed the dates & direction of Iowa’s ride. There are many small week long bike rides to pick from, and for IR to survive, it’s going to have to find its own niche, not go head to head with RAGBRAI. After 15 years of RAGBRAI, I’ve seen a lot of Iowa, and if I were going to do a different ride, it would be somewhere new. As it happens, I’ve registered not only for RAGBRAI 2020, but for another, smaller week long ride, Ride Illinois’ GIBT ride in June.
I ran a bunch of Iowa’s Ride’s webpages through the wayback machine, and although I didn’t do every page, I found nothing that had been updated after Oct 16th. The wayback machine is an internet tool that allows you to see when web pages have been updated & what they looked like in the past.
I don’t think training speed is the issue. At most you have to make around 80 miles a day, & it’s best but not required to be off road by 6:00 pm when SAG ends. That’s pretty doable even at 10 miles an hour, plus your average speed on the ride is affected by a lot of things, like crowds, hills, headwinds, lines at food stands, stuff you stop to see or do. I think the issue is endurance – can you ride 8 or so hours a day for several days? Can you get up hills? How much saddle time have you had on your RAGBRAI bike? Can your butt handle being on the bike for days in a row?
I emailed @ragbrai.com">email@example.com about this. I haven’t heard back, probably because of the holiday. Some services are taxable in Iowa, but I don’t see the ragbrai type of service on the list of taxable services. Here’s the list: https://tax.iowa.gov/iowa-sales-and-use-tax-taxable-services-0
Did ZinZen get in? Good luck to him or her!
Did Zinzen get in?
Did not get an email but went to the site & looked up my records. Hurrah! Good news! Just hope there isn’t someone with my name & birth date that I looked at by mistake.:( I have a very common name & have met 2 people with the same name who were roughly the same age.
