Does this mean for the 49.7 miles on day one, there is about a 1/2 mile of total climb for the whole day??
Yes. But to be clear, that does NOT mean that there is only a half mile of the ride that includes climbing.

On this website, go to main menu, choose “THE RIDE” and then “GENERAL INFORMATION”
In that section you will see a list of “what to pack”.
Generally, first timers (including myself a few years ago) will pack way too much. Iowa is not a third world nation, lots of places to purchase forgotten items.

I use a Da Brim helmet visor and it works well for me. I do, however, ride a recumbent trike so my riding position is drastically different than a rider of a road bike. I have seen riders of upright bike wearing Da Brim successfully.
The Da Brim really expands the ‘shade’ area around your head and face.

Hi Kathryn,
No doubt there will be someone who responds that they had no problem using a hammock. But from my experience, trees are few and far between. I would plan on a tent.

Actually, I found most of FSU’s posts mildly irritating but still entertaining. BB’s responses were even more irritating, even offensive and not at all entertaining. His last post here would warrant banning if I were the owner/moderator of this site.

The I-Phone GPS sucks battery life pretty fast. Maybe an hour or two. But with the external battery, I can go a couple of days.

Hi Caroline,
I cannot go for a ride without MotionX-GPS. Many nice features. I use an external battery to keep it powered thru the ride.

Thanks, pretty good guide. I am a six time rider. Just a couple of comments to add: 1. You can still get sunburn on an overcast day. 2. You recommend carrying a spare tire, I’m sure you meant spare inner tube. 3. Totes would be nice but not allowed on the Register truck nor most charters.

Just a thought. You might like to do another ride prior to RAGBRAI that will get you accustomed to riding in a group etc. The link below is for the North Carolina Coastal ride that will take place in April.
