Not to worry. Our first year (2012) we really didn’t have a freaking clue so we showed up on Sunday morning about 9:30, quite surprised to find most people gone. We had not wanted to camp that Saturday night. There are however still plenty of people around and you will find the route without difficulty. There are a million ways to do RAGBRAI…[Read more]
I have a vehicle pass we are not going to use. The only catch is that your group has to join the dance flash mob I am trying to organize! PM me and we can work out the details.
And, yes, I would love some cake.
I am an orthopedic surgeon who is about to do my 7th RAGBRAI, I would think you can still do it but definitely stay off the bike until the pain is resolved. Agree with the comments above that you need a change in position or seat (or both). Your ass is telling you this isn’t working. You might even try a stationary bike to keep peddling, as…[Read more]
I use a Celtic Blu Tallboy. It has worked great and fits into a water bottle holder. There is a remote to attach to the handlebar. Can work through bluetooth or an SD card (when there is no connection). Furthermore, it has a huge battery that can also charge your phone.
Does anyone else feel RAGBRAI is losing some of the quirkiness? My first ride was XLV and some of the characters were quite memorable. A guy riding a fixed gear bike wearing only a white women’s bikini (top and bottom) comes to mind. Seems like the ride has become a bit more homogeneous. Thoughts?

We always try to hit local, non-chain restaurants to make sure the towns gain something out of this mammoth invasion. Two years ago we found a gem of a breakfast place – buffet, bloodies/mmimosas, ac and…[Read more]
My first year was also 2011. Oy, the heat! Because we were clueless knuckleheads, we arrived Sunday morning. Our preparations were haphazard at best. What expo? We had our own support vehicles so we didn’t need to find the truck. The key to the congestion would likely be to come toward the truck from the exact opposite direction everyone is…[Read more]
I am looking forward to my 5th RAGBRAI and like so many people, wish I had started so much sooner. Some critical points:
1. A ride, not a race! Start early in the day and take many breaks. Be a tortoise not a hare in your first year.
2. Do a few days rather than the whole week. Some logistics might be easier depending on where you live.
